The thing is the majority of these mass shootings are being carried out with firearms that were purchased legally. That is why saying all that will happen if you ban high capacity mags is criminals will buy them doesn't really carry much weight. Like I said earlier these aren't career criminals these are 1 time criminals.

At a MINIMUM lets make folks register high capacity magazines. Let's close the private sales loopholes and make people register all gun transactions and pass background inspections. The social side of things is certainly where the money needs to be spent but man legislating the social side is going to be even harder than the gun side.

The argument that only criminals will have these things if banned (30 round magazines etc...) doesn't hold much weight for me. These mass shootings aren't done by career criminals. They are done by one time criminals who are mentally ill. The shooter in Colorado had a 100 round magazine. He killed all those people without having to reload once. At least if they have to reload or switch weapons there is a small window of opportunity to escape or take out the gunman. Banning guns isn't the answer. However getting rid of things like 100 round and 30 round clips seems reasonable.

It is also alleged that the gunman threw a canister emitting a gas or smoke, partially obscuring the audience members' vision, making their throats and skin itch, and causing eye irritation. He then fired a 12-gauge Remington 870 Express Tactical shotgun, first at the ceiling and then at the audience. He also fired a Smith & Wesson M&P15 semi-automatic rifle with a 100-round drum magazine, which malfunctioned after reportedly firing fewer than 30 rounds. Finally, he fired a Glock 22 handgun.
