I don't know, I don't work for a union but if that UAW went away, how much would those line workers make and what would there benefits be like? (that is a serious question).

I think it would be like anything else, competition for the job, who is willing to do that work for the least pay. Ultimately it's capitalism in my opinion. I could be way wrong here but that's what I think. I also think that if I feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick with my employer, I'll find another similar and negotiate a better employment. If I can't negotiate anything better then perhaps I really am doing the best I can in my field?
And that's the way it is now...and look at the billions being pumped into these campaigns. Makes me sick to think of how that money could have been spent on employing people.

I agree, but ultimately a corporation is in business and needs to make money. So they are spending money in a way they think they'll get the best ROI.
Look how many people the union can hire if they didn't do the same, right?

Sure but the union's whole intent was to create better "conditions" for the employee. Why do you work for a company that has a union?
My friend and I also got into a big discussion over the Sacramento Kings. I don't know how much national attention they are getting, but it's a HUGE deal here in Sacramento.
I know cities build arenas for their sports teams, and cater to them, etc. But I think that falls into this same scenario. The city (gov't) is spending money for a corporation to keep them in their city. I know sports is a whole different ball game (no pun intended) and I see a reason why they actually help the economy of a city but the Kings are out of control with their demands for the arena.
I don't know a lot about Unions but when I first came to Colorado it was interesting to find out that one of the Unions here the Union President wasn't doing much and had his kids in top positions not doing much, making a bunch of money. He quit and took a brand new truck with him.
Doesn't seem right. Shouldn't have that money gone to the workers?
