        I think MP says 87, she does get treated to premium on occasion though, some say thats a waste of money.... Who would ever waste money on a boat???

                That is the reason. Since we have less oxygen, less chance of knock/ignition/detonation. Lower octane = more energy content per gallon, higher octane = less energy content but allows you to run more timing on the engine due to it not detonating as early which means your engine has the potential to make more horsepower.

                  Our altitude allows me to run ~12:1 compression on 91 octane gas. People with turbo's can also run higher compression.
