    SC Vacation Ideas

One of my married kids was transferred to Charleston, SC (her husband flies C17s) and we want to have our summer vacation there. We're thinking about renting a beach house for a week. Do any of you east coast residents have any suggestions, experiences, or contacts that you would share? It would need to be earlier June and we will have a total of 12 people including some younger grand-kids. We probably don't want go as far north as Myrtle Beach. I don't golf but we love the water, beaches and typical family type activities. I appreciate your comments.

This will be a big departure from our traditional Lake Powell trip that we haven't missed for the last 12 years. I'll still make some shorter camping trips there, but no houseboat this year.

we love Hilton Head SC about 90 mins away by car but its been a long time since we drove it and might be too far. Its a beach, golf, tennis type place - very family oriented. Not too commercial and scenic. Can be very pricey for house that size on the beach but may other options off beach or condos. jb

I'm not much of a beach-comber, so I cant make any beach recommendations, but I can tell you 2 places to stay away from....Myrtle Beach and Hunting Island. Other then that the NC, SC, GA and FL beaches are some of the best and prettiest sand and water. There is a state park near Columbia (East of it) that does canoe trips into the swaps, that would be a great day trip. I need to dig around and see what else there is to do down that way. Most of what I am familiar with is in the Western part of the state and kinda outdoorsy, not sure what you guys like to do.

The end of May and early June is the Picolo Spoletto Festival, I think it runs until June 12 so downtown and close surrounding areas will be packed.
If you want a cheaper/younger beach area I would recommend the Folly Beach area. Minutes from downtown and a fun upcoming area for vacations.
If you are looking for a more expensive golf resort style area and more adult family style beaches try Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island, Still close to downtown and easy to get to shopping areas.
If your looking to kill the bank account, Kiawah Island. Very unique mostly gated vacation community. There are some reasonable places to stay on the island but mostly a very wealthy place to stay. Its a good 45 minutes plus to get downtown without traffic. Either way you will have a great time. Heads up on the humidity, June is hot and muggy.

The closest beaches are the Isle of palms (high dollar) and Folly beach. If you drive 35 mins south there is awesome family beach called Edisto beach. Not commercial family beach laid back and reasonable. I have a beach house there and if you need a phone number to a rental agency PM and i will get you a number. You can rental a big house for under $2500 a week or less depending on the location. Has a golf course, parasailing, inshore and deep see fishing, and boat rentals.
