    Need input please:)

    Hello,

I am brand new to wakeboarding and I want to get into it. I have been doing some researching on what boats to get within my price range and I have a couple questions. Everyone I have spoken to have recommended a V Drive over a DD for wakeboarding but with the TAPS system is that still relevant? I am still not exactly clear about the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Also I am looking at a 2001 2100V Riders Edition that is being offered at 19900. Upgraded 343HP engine 145 hours, all kinds of other goodies except for Perfect Pass. What do you all think would be a good offering price for that boat? I am thinking of offering 17.5k for it. Anyways any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

The TAPS does not make as drastic of difference as some would lead you to believe. If you have never wakeboarded before you would be perfectly fine behind a DD until your skills got better which would likely take a while. You can get a nice wake from a DD with some ballast.
If you want a more functional boat and you're not going to do any slalom, get a V drive. They have more space in them and the resale is going to be better--the market is also a little bit bigger for them. I think as a "do-it-all" boat a V drive wins hands down.

The boat you listed, if it's in good shape, would be a great buy at $17.5k. I think you'd be doing well even if you can get it for $18.5k. This assumes it's in good shape of course. You can put a GPS based Perfect Pass on for 1120$ from onlyinboards.com and from my understanding the install is very easy and takes only a few hours (never personally done it yet) If you're serious about grabbing a boat soon I would definitely check that boat out!!
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

If you are going to primarily wakeboard then yes a V Drive will give you the best wake. I have a DD and the wake is okay but the V drive def. better.

As for the boat that isn't many hours on a 2001. I've got a 2004 with over 300 hours on it. Have it throughly checked out cause underuse can cause problems as well.

Good luck Tige builds a good boat and you'll have many years of fun.

to me it depends on what DD your talking about a 05 22I is a DD that will put out a really nice wakeboard wake(and surf)compared to say the 04 switch mentioned above.I would also disagree that TAPS does not do much.I find it very helpful in shaping the wake for different styles/skill levels of riders.
the 21v you are looking at is a great boat for wakebaording. That year tige wasnt into the "bling" as much as they are now but they were all about building a solid boat (and still are today).
IMPO i would try and find an 03 or up. thats when the convex v came along and really started to produce the better wakes IMPO.
Yes and by the way what ever you spend on whatever you get make sure you save some cash for perfect pass its the best thing you will ever do to your boat IMPO.I always tell people to count on about $500 of misc. things that you will find or have go wrong in the first couple of trips. If you just paln on them there easier to deal with IMPO.
        GOOD LUCK!

A v drive has more room,I have a 2002 21v riders edition and love it. The interior has fallen apart, twice, ugg, but the wake is great and even in as big as a boat as it is you can slalom pretty well with it. Perfect pass is a must, worth the $.

Thanks for all your help, I have an offer in and he is considering it. If this doesn't go through can you tell me what changes Tige made to their boats from 98 to 2002 or so? Just trying to get the most bang for my back

            Thanks!

Actually, it really depends on what boat he's looking at. The hull designs for older Tiges were pretty similar, so it really didn't matter whether you had a V-Drive or D-Drive, as long as you had it weighted properly, the wake was largely the same. That started to change more dramatically with the introduction of the 22Ve in 2005. The only exception is the 20i, which is designed to be a more of a ski boat.

Doesn't the 20V and the 20I share the same hull?

There is a pretty good diff between them, not as dramatic as a 22i and 22Ve maybe.

chpthril is right, the 20i is way different than the other hulls. It's almost flat in the back. 20V is more like the other Vs except shorter.

But he was asking about a 2001 model V drive vs a similar vintage D-Drive. With the exception of the 20i, most models were the same.

Yep, it seems that the 1st gen V-drive hulls were pretty similar to the DD's at the time, now they are worlds apart.

I have a 2002 23V and loooooove it. It puts off a great wake with no ballast. That is the benefit of the v-drive, beside the extra cabin room is all the weight is already engineered into the back you don't need extra ballast. I highly recommend "Perfect Pass" as an addition to what ever model you get as this allows you to pick your speed and the boat will maintain it pretty much constantly. I paid 30K for the 2002 23V in 2007. I would think 19K is fairly decent price for the 2001 22V but you can check nadaguides.com for a reference. Its an online bluebook ref for rv's, boat, motorcycles, etc.
