Nope, time to replace the steering cable. It's lasted a long time.

Everything this guy just said is

Nah just kidding! He's right, replace the steering cable. The way I see it, if you are going to pull the steering cable out to lube it you might as well just replace it. Then at least it will last longer.

Steering cables wear out for various reasons. Usually its not due to use but lack of use. When the cable gets wet. as its certain to do, the water gets inside and corrodes. Most of the time you notice this at the start of the season because the cable has been sitting and hasnt moved and also your not used to the feel of the wheel.
Ofcourse there are other theories about steering cables. One being that the fiction of the water builds up an electric charge on the steering cable and with the addition of water corrodes.

maybe the boat building rocket scientist should keep the cable out of the bilage canal thats proabley why the old boat lasted so long

On the Tige V-Drives, the steering cable sits down low in the hull, which is convex. Eventually, it ends up with water in it. One of the Tige mechanics recommends to run the replacement over the gas tank to avoid this issue.

Well with having a rudder it doesnt leave you with much options on were and how to route and implicate a cable. Plus being a tow boat the bilges are extremely shallow with not much space to add a bunch of extra equipment. Theres always the alternative of having "fly by wire" steering, but thats just one more important system that could fail in the marine environment.

I would rather put up with stiff steering cables and replace it every couple years instead of having some unfortunate accident because my steering failed...

maybe they could put the rudder in front of the V-Drive to make the cable shorter... but then it would only work in reverse...
If its not fun, Why do it?

In this case, lack of use will do more harm then over use......................and I'm still talking about steering cable
