There should be no water in your V-Drive cooler. It will all run out of the raw water intake.

The V-drive cooler is in a chamber cast into the V-drive casing. The raw water lines feed water thru the chamber. The V-drive fluid is pumped thru a coiled tube that passes thru the chamber. (Similar to a car auto trans cooler in a radiator tank.) Just as dogbert said most of the water will run out of the chamber back thru the raw water intake when the raw water pump stops. A little water will sit in the bottom of the chamber. The bottom plug you pulled is for draining the V-drive fluid when it needs to be changed. Not sure what the side plug is for.

So do you not recommend draining the v drive cooler? If you do decide to drain the v drive cooler, what's the best way to get to it?

On your boat, most of the water will drain from the V-drive cooler when you pull the boat out of the water. The rest will drain when you pull the hose of the trans cooler.

Thanks. I put it up on the lift and not on a trailer. I would think it would still be ok. I didn't pull the v drive cooler plugs last year.
