    Trans oil light on

I was pulling the kids on the tube and looked down and the Trans oil light was on. I looked and all the gauges were normal, temp, oil press, voltage. Checked the engine compartment and everything was normal. Any advice on what might be happening. It looks like from reading other threads that the light is for the v-drive not the transmission, correct? I am going to go check the levels on the v-drive to see it that tells me anything. I just need to know if I should not use it any more. I just got the boat in May and have had no trouble. Boat had 60 hours on it and now has about 90. Engine is Merc 350 MPI w/ Velvet trans and Walker V-drive. Need a fix so we can use it the rest of the weekend. We are renting a house on the lake till Sunday. Help!

Yup, check all fluid levels 1st.

Looks like the oil level is low. Hopefully that will solve it. Do you fill through the dipstick hole or somewhere else?

It's best to check when warm, but if it's real low, add a little, then recheck when you can get it warmed up. Dont add too much as it only holds about 1qt total.

        Fill from dipstick is perfect.

It was warm as I chacked it about 10-15 min after we came in. Didn't even register on the dip stick, maybe just a little on the very tip, definitely needs some. I'll put a little in and then circle the cove to get it moved around and then check/add till it looks good. What is best to put in. The tag attached recommends several different things based on the model of drive. How do you know what model you have. Are the forged numbers on the top the model #. 27 is the first number so I assume I have a RV-27. It is blue. Thanks for the help

Added about 1/4 quart and no more light. Thanks for the help. I was worried I would have 4 kids wanting to be entertained and no boat, oh the horror!

Where do you suppose the oil went? It either was not full when you got it, or you have a leak. When I bought mine last year the v-drive was leaking oil at the output shaft seal due to prop shaft misalignment that had slightly grooved the v-drive output shaft. Replacing the seal was a "fun" winter project. Fortunately, it didn't leak very fast.

I don't think any had been added for a while. I've been watching and there has not been any oil in the bilge. I will keep an eye on it. Thanks

I had a similar issue earlier this year. My guess is that we just used it enough in hot weather where it needed some more because my service manager said it wasn't leaking as far as they could tell.

It may have just evaporated if it has not been topped in 4 years.
The engine, trans & V-drive are vented to the atmosphere.
If oil & rubber didn't evaporate our roads would be lined with piles of rubber and awash in oil.
