2002 21v FOX riders edition steering cable?

My question: does anyone know if it's a 17' or 18' that I need? Maybe even a part number? It's the Teleflex rack & pinion helm which I think may be the standard after 2001. I found the following from the posts for a 2001 21v: TEL SSC13417. Are they the same across multiple years?

It fealt almost "locked" when I first put it in the water a few weeks ago but I was able to free it up a bit... still quite hard to turn though. I've been looking at the threads and betting it's my steering cable. I was ok driving it... but my wife doesn't quite have the strength to steer and still adjust the throttle at the same time... so my kiddo's get to have fun, but me... not so much.

I know it's going to be a difficult install... (I can barely reach the cable by hand under the motor) but I'll do what I have to do to get back in the water (behind the boat and not just in it!)

I think they should be the same, but maybe FIC or lee can confirm that.

When you take off the cable there will be a similar number. The last two are the length.

I would bet its a 17'

Look for printing on the cable housing near the helm. Ours was on top and hard to read. The first 6 digits are the style of end connections and the last 2 are the length in feet.

I changed my cable last month. Let give you some tips based on what happen with me.

1) Remove the bolt at the rudder.
2) Remove the mounting nut (this is the big nut that hold the guide tube to hull. It will take 2 wrenches, as the bolt is designed to spin)
3) Now pull the cable up into the locker, and remove the guide tube.
4) Tie a rope through the end of the cable
5) Remove the corner block from under the dash ( this is what covers the cables as they run down the side wall under the dash)
6) Remove the rack from under the dash ( 4 screws)
7) Pull the cable up from under the dash ( on some boats, you might have to raise the gas tank just a little to get the cable to slide out)
8) At the one end of the cable, there should be an embossed set of numbers. ( these are also painted white, but if the color came off, you can still read them)
9) Replace the new cable in the opposite order. It took me about 1.5 hours from start to finish. ( I had to raise my gas tank, as I have a 38 gal tank)

You can use a SSC13417 or SSC13418. Run the new cable on top of the gas tank to remove the low spot and to raise the cable. That will keep moist of the water out of the cable and slow down the corrosion inside of the jacket.

You should not have to do this. Remove the nut from the support tube only and pull the cable out.

On my switch, there is only about.5" under the tank, as i have the 38 gallon. In 2005 they whent to a 30gal with more room under it. ( so i was told )

When I replace my cable, I loosend my tanke and raised thr front of the tank aobut 1/4 of a inch. I used a portable ram. Worked like a charm.

Thanks for the info as I'm fixing to do my '01 21V. This info along with the sticky is a nice surprise.

Any preference for the 17' or 18' for an '01 21V Rider's Edition? I plan to run it OVER the gas tank!

Either will work. What way does your rack point, which side does the cable exit? Some exit on the hull side and some exit on the walk-thru side. That would be the only difference.

Exits on the walk-through side. 17 footer should be fine, I'd assume. Thanks again.
