Shift ring and throttle wire problem

We just got a 2008 20v and keep having problems with the shift ring slipping over the throttle wire making it impossible to shift into gear or into reverse. The dealer has worked on it and put the wire back into the hole in the shift ring but it comes back out again on the lake. He is ordering a new throttle. Has anyone else had this problem? The shift ring seems a bit flimsy to me and I'm concerned this is going to be an ongoing issue. Thank you in advance for your time.

    Congrats, great looking boat.

Have not heard of this yet, I'd say the new shifter/throttle will fix and you'll be good to go

yes i had this on one of ours do this. what i found to be the fix was drilling the whole all the way through were the wire hooks in. i put it back and tried it a few times but until i drilled the whole it would come back out. drilling the hole fixed the problem. well atleast as far as i know. the customer has not complained about it doing it anymore. its been a month or so im sure if it wasnt fixed i would of heard from him.

Did you bend the wire down on the outside to keep it from slipping out?

Thank you for your reply! I hope you are right. This problem has become quite frustrating but outside of that, we love our boat!

Great looking boat. Is that a new kind of rudder under the swim platform, doggy paddle left or right? I hope things get fixed and working properly for you.
My dad always said "Stupid Hurts". He's yet to be proven wrong, but for some reason I keep trying.

Thanks! Yes, that is our dog, Tucker. As you can tell, he gets all excited when we get the boat ready to go to the lake! He hasn't been out on this boat yet but I am hoping it will be easier for him to get into the boat out the water with the swim platform. Before this boat, he had to wear a doggie life jacket so I could haul him in by the shoulder handle.

First, nice boat!!! Second, we have an 07 22I and took it out for the 5th time this past weekend and the same thing happened to us. I was circling to pick up a boarder and after shifting into neutral, couldn't get it back in forward or reverse.......very frustrating.....it's at the dealer for the 20hr. service and they are supposed to check into this for us. I LOVE our boat and am very pleased with TIGE......hopefully we can get this minor setback fixed. Hopefully I will be back in the next week bragging on this forum about Hook and Anchor Marine in San Angelo, TX. They just picked up Tige boats this summer(new owners).....the dealer we purchased our boat from no longer carries tige Anyway, they have been awesome and have really gone out of their way to help with servicing our boat from now on. Let me know how long it takes to get a new shifter because they will be ordering one for us as well.

I will let you know. So far I have been very pleased with the Skier's Wharf Extreme in Rogers, AR but this is the second time our boat has been in the shop with this problem. I hope a new shifter will fix it up right.

they are definitely going to have to order a new shifter for ours, we were close to a pretty rocky shoreline when it happened and didn't want to drift into the rocks, so did what it took to get it into gear by forcing it. (hated to do it, but maybe in the end, it forces them to replace the shifter ) hope everything works out for you guys.....and us as well.

what lake do you go to???.......i have family in arkadelphia which is probably a pretty good distance from you......Lake DeGray is gorgeous around there.

We go to Beaver Lake in Rogers. I've been to DeGray but it's been a long time ago when I lived in South Arkansas. It really is a beautiful lake. Beaver Lake is usually beautiful but all the violent thunderstorms one right after the other this spring have it all muddy right now.

The first time the shifter went out, we were in the middle of the lake with little or no wind so we didn't have to worry about being blown into anything. I called the mechanic and he told me what I needed to do to get us going again. The throttle wire was sticking out UNDER the shift ring and had to be pressed into the handle to allow the ring to fall down. We were able to use a key to get the wire back into position. The second time, it was windy with a lot of boat traffic and I was approaching the dock. When I went to shift into reverse to slow the boat, the shifter was stuck. There wasn't time to fiddle with the wire so we all scrambled around and kept the boat off of the dock and off the other boats close by. Once we secured the boat, we got the shifter fixed pretty quickly and still managed to enjoy the rest of the day. I've never seen a shifter designed this way before. It seems to be a poor design from my experience so far.

Maybe we should get together and patent a new design for tige.

Shift ring and throttle wire problem

SAME PROBLEM on 2007 20V. I took mine all apart and I fixed the wires that were worn through and shorting out for the TAPS. The problem is the chrome inner ring needs to NOT move and with the poor design it does NOT lock into place like it should and when it moves it tears up the wires and is a danger issue too. I called Tige and they did not offer me any help other than telling me that it is made by Teleflex Marina Controls. I called Teleflex and they said its the first they heeard of this. This control is total junk. I fixed mine by spacing the handle more between the control handle and the chrome inner ring but its not perfect and I am afraid to have anyone drive the boat because of it. I need to get this thing fixed correctly somehow.

I took my throttle off, and used a dremel cut off wheel to remove the tab that locks into the chrome ring. The cheap "wire/plastic ring" will never last once you start having problems with it. If you can get the dealer to replace it, good for you, but if out of warranty, just disable it.

Its a bit of a pain to fully remove, as you have to deal with the TAPS wires. I cut them near where they enter a plastic connector to the right of driver's leg area, then just recrimped them back together with an appropriate connector after reinstalling the throttle.

Also remember TAPS is hot at all times, even with key off, so disconnect battery before cutting.

Suggest you don't do this if planning to sell the boat, since you have disabled a "safety" feature.
