    New Transmission

Took my boat out last weekend, my first voyage as a proud owner of a '99 2100v.

I let the boat idle until the engine warmed up, and as soon as I put any power on the throttle, transmission oil lit up. Pulled back to idle, and smoke came billowing out of the engine compartment and the smell of transmission fluid filled the air.

I limped back to the boat ramp and took it to a mechanic. Now he tells me I need a new transmission and it will set me back $4,500 plus labor.

Ouch! First time on the lake!

$4,500 seems steep if it was a car transmission with gears, differentials, etc. but $4,500 for a v-drive tranny? That's a lot of bread.

Am I nuts, or is that a reasonable estimate? Anyone out there had to replace their transmission?

Is it the tranny or the vdrive you should have two units? But $4500 seems high.

I assumed that both were part of the "transmission". Thanks for making the distinction. I'll check with the mechanic.

This is what the vdrive should look like.

All the inboards have a transmission that gives you idle, drive, and reverse, and the V-drives have a V-drive which changes the direction of the drive-train much like a transfer case on a 4x4

I think if you can do a tranny swap in a car, you would be ok doing it in your boat. The hardest part to me would be pulling the shafts.

The V-Drive bolts with six bolts to the transmission which in turn bolts to the bellhousing. I just had to R&R my Walter V-Drive to repair a leaking output shaft seal. It's not hard if you're mechanically inclined, and you don't have to pull the prop shaft from the boat. You will have to align the engine/prop shaft when you're done, or you could take it in and have it done. Pulling the transmission should just be another few bolts etc. after the v-drive. I think the engine mounts are affixed to the bellhousing and the transmission just hangs off the bellhousing so you shouldn't have to support the engine itself.

Before you go to wrenching, I'd first check the tranny fluid level, then smell it for burnt. Maybe it was just low on oil. Is it possible someone drained the oil for winterization and never refilled it? If its empty of oil you might call the seller.... You might also try calling these guys and discuss the symptoms with them:

I just found them via google and know nothing else about them. It looks like you could get a brand new 72C transmission from them for under $3K, or perhaps your's rebuilt for $600-$1,200 per their website. Of course, you'll need to verify your transmission model number which should be on a plate on the transmission itself.

Be sure to check the oil level in the v-drive as well...

1999 should be a Merc engine with a velvet drive transmission.

Thats good to know, just in case any of use every need any boat tranny work. Just a questions, are these transmission difficult to rebuild? There can't be much to them, not at all like a car.

                          Thanks for offering this out.

skidim.com carries rebuild kits. Someone on here rebuilt one a whole back. I am sure if you are mechanically inclined, you can shade tree it just fine.
