I wonder how often does the GPS based systems sample , reason I ask even high end GPS plotters on boats I have seen none of them sample at a very high rate so there is a time delay. They would would great for constant direction/speed stuff but worry in a area with short runs they would over shoot more then paddle wheel feedback.

Plus GPS still goes down every once in a while. I was out doing fieldwork this summer where we relied on a very accurate Trimble GPS...usually withing 1 foot accuracy, and most of the gps satellites went down for almost 3 hours so our accuracy was not closer than 3 meters, we had to stop work and could get no speed reading. The cool part was we were over around the Kennedy Space Center and we had one of NASA's biologists with us so he go an answer very quickly for us. Enough rant about GPS, I would still put a paddle wheel in. I wonder how the GPS reacts to currents???
Signguy, you boat on Lake Medina? That's where I grew up, well for 8 years atleast.
