    20V design evolution

    Hey all,

I am hoping to become a 20V owner in a week or so. I am looking at a 2002 20V. It seems like the right boat for my family. I have one main concern. There is quite a bit of stuff on the net about porpoising. I get the dynamics of it and how the TAPs system should eliminate the problem. I have read the postings on this site in regards to the issue. From my readings it appears that folks with newer 20Vs have less problems than those with an older one.

This has led me to ask if anyone knows of the design changes made on the 20V over the last 6 years? i.e. if I buy an '02 20V and it oscillates is there something fundamental (like hull design) that is going to leave me unhappy.

The lakes we ski on are in the mountains so we have a tendency to get some pretty good wind/chop on them in the afternoons. I will be disappointed if the boat is terrible at cutting the chop.

I plan to do an on the water test to figure it out but in the mean time I was hoping to get some insight.

    Thanks

I had an 02 20V. In heavy chop with everyone in the cockpit area the boat would porpoise. Easily cured by adjusting taps. Its just finding the right combination. The lake I boat on tends to get very choppy due to crowds and winds and I moved up to the 24V. Overall I was very happy with my 20V.

All I can say is take it out for a demo in those windy choppy conditions and decide for yourself.
    Let it be!!!

I have the same boat. I bought it last summer and put about 20 hours on it. I never had any trouble with porpoising at all unless the GO-FAST boats were around and then a little bit of Taps helped out. If that is your only concern your hesitation will be short-lived.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

        Thanks guys

I am feeling more confident already. I will put it though it's paces on the water but owner confidence mean a lot.

The 07's porpoise also but an adjustment on Taps gets rid of it. It seems like it is possible to over trim the 20V because of its length. We experienced it in rough conditions and like I said I was able to adjust Taps and it went away and the boat still rode well in rough conditions.

If it is an issue, just get some lead weights and throw them in the bow compartments. It won't take much.

Basically any boat that allows a high degree of upwards bow trim may porpoise depending on numerous factors including prop pitch, bow weight, water conditions etc. I have experienced it on all boats that I have owned and it typically is caused by trimming up too high.

Adjusting trim down will stop the porpoising or more bow weight like Dogbert indicates. Increasing speed a little or in the long run even change your prop pitch. Many short boats do this so it should not be a concern with the 20V design because it can easily be rectified by trim or speed settings which unless you become a speed demon won't adversly affect the ride.

The only reason I suggested the lead was that the 20v is a little light in the bow. It's easily rectified. I'd take a larger cockpit over a larger bow any day. You're gonna love that boat!

In 2004 tige changed the hull. It was on the switch in 2004 only and moved over to the 20V in 2005. The new hull was to make the Taps 2 work more efficiently. Even with the new design, some people have had to add a shim to the taps plate. I added 1/4" to mine.

whitlock - When you say shim, did you shim it for a larger wake, or a smaller wake?

                      New Boat

                      Hey Guys,

I bought the boat. Check out the pic. It is in great shape. It was great on the water... I was able to eliminate any porpoising with the TAPs. Even in rough water. I will probably change out the prop, but other than that she is great.

I am going to start a new thread on the prop subject...

Congratulations. That boat look very familar. If it came with the stock bimini, its a pain in the Arse.
