Fuel only works in an engine when it is atomized to a fine spray. Injectors do this perfectly, and only spray (on-time controlled by ECM) when the intake stroke is beginning (intake valve open). This results in a more complete burn of the air/fuel charge, less wasted fuel, and lower emissions. With a carb, fuel has a tendency to fall out of suspension while in the intake, and puddle up as liquid fuel again. Fuel in a liquid form will not combust, and therefore travels right out the exhaust as HC (hydrocarbon) emissions.
