    2005 22V engine wont start

The engine started fine and ran, but belt was squealing. I cut the engine, then tried to start again and it kept sputtering. I thought it might be gas, but when I opened the hatch there was burning rubber from what I think was the belt.

I put in gas, but engine would fire then stop. I'm sure the belt is slipping, so my first guess is the impeller.

My problem with diagnosis is the fact that the impeller is new. Though its been sitting, the boat ran fine 2 weeks ago and I have not made any rookie mistakes in terms of running engine without water nor has the weather been bad.

In addition, I had a 1999 2100i that had a disintegrated impeller In that case, the engine did not cut out, though the belt slipped.

    Any ideas?

Also, if it is the impeller are there any good threads for replacing the part on the 2005 22V? The engine is a 340 vortec.

Responses ASAP would be much appreciated. I have an appointment to winterize the boat next week and it is on a slip which requires me to drive the boat in order to trailer it.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Did you try to tension the belt? I had a similiar problem. Boat started sputtered amd died and when I restarted the belt was slipping, it would start and run but the belt slipped. I tightened up the belt and it was fine.

I felt the belt and it seemed tight. I'll double check that again. Did your did the belt start burning? I guess that would make sense.

Sounds like the impeller flipped. Would need to remove the housing cover and inspect the direction of the "blades". If flipped, remove and reinstall impeller.

Check your idler pulley and make sure it turns freely. Mine seized up a couple of years ago and cause similer problems.

Also check your alternator. A few years ago mine siezed and my belt burned up.

thanks for help. looks like it was frozen alternator bearings. Those things might make good popsicles.
