    2005 24v 6.0 overheating while at idle???

My second day with my boat we had it idling for about 15 minutes and it overheated and spewed coolant out. What could cause this? Why do they put a radiator on this engine instead of cooling with lake water? The boat is awesome and we skied yesterday for hours, no problems! The boat is now at the dealership. Any ideas? Thanks.

The 6.0 is all aluminum thats why it has a cooling system.

Why would you idle your boat for 15 minutes? Turn it off. Any engine will get hot or warmer than normal idling for 15 minutes, even your car. Make sure the coolant caps are all tight too.

My son and wife were in the boat without me and they left it running without me knowing. It shouldn't overheat by running at idle ever should it? It hit 250 on the gauge and created a huge mess. How does it cool any better when it is being run hard down the lake with a radiator compared to a lake cooled motor? I don't and won't be idling that long anymore, but I don't think it should've done that. Does anyone know of anything else I need them to check out with this engine? Or, is there any weird things I need to know about this set up that I need to watch out for? I'm new to an inboard and a closed cooling system. Thanks.

I don't know about the closed cooling. Only thing I could think is that the heat exchange wasn't as efficient sitting in one location.

I would think that running at idle should not be a problem. I do this whenever I start my boat first thing to let the engine warm up. Once my temp hits a certain level, then we can start boarding or skiing.

I think that some people who run in salt water prefer that, so that might be one advantage, but I really dunno. It just seems like something else that might break. In my mind, anything that makes a boat more complicated is asking for something else to break.

With an aluminum engine it is manditory to have a cooling system , do to the electrolus , the 6.0l if it hasnt had the cooling system modified it will overheat when idling do to its stock desigh. We have used the 6.0l for 4 years in competition on our ski team boat after modifications with no problems.

Call him, his name is Dom and his number is 888-517-3178, his website is www.inboardconnection.com. He is my dealer and very knowledgeable. Usually he gives his number out, but I think I beat him to it. Good luck.

We have the Marine Power 380 hp engine in our 05 24V and have had no problems at all. I was told the 6.0 is a truck engine stuck in a boat and this is why the heat exchanger is required. This engine runs a little hotter, 180 or so compared to our 5.7 which ran at 175. We bought the boat with 32 hours so maybe the dealer got to it before we bought it. Hope you get your running cooler.

It's running now. The dealer put a new water pump in it. Thanks for all the responses.
