Last Friday night, I put the boat in and it got hot right away... failed impeller... no big deal.....
I had replaced it in spring 2005, and it was 2 years old at the time and looked brand new. So I had figured maybe I would get 3 years out of the impeller... guess I figgered wrong.... I will replace every year now...... $30 well spent.
Anyway, this was a TOTAL impeller failure, where there were no flappers left on the impeller.. I caught the marina before closing and as luck would have it, they had one in stock... $30 out the door.....
I desided to do the replacement at the marina with a sketchy set of tools. At home, with a pneumatic ratchet, it is a 10 min job.... but it took me over an hour. It was getting dark and I got the silly thing on upsidedown.... It only tooks a minute of runtime to discover my error, which I corrected temporarily by swapping the hoses. When I pulled off the hose from the pump to to the motor, ( which the pump was sucking on, rather than pumping into ) it was full of broken pump impeller flaps from the old impeller..... which it had "vaccuumed "out of the motor..
So.... when an impeller goes bad and a competent mechanic ( not a hack like me) puts in a new one, ( not operating backwards ) how do the broken impeller parts get out of the motor ??
Any thoughts ??
