    24V 6.0L Questions?

After using my 24v this weekend, I could always smell coolant burning. I found that the resivoir was empty. I filled it up and it has since dropped again but seems to be going down alot slower then before. I am not sure if this is normal or mabe it is stopping just the level was not high enough initially?

The right rear ballast is not working, but the rest of them are. What are some things to look for? IT will empty but not fill.

The Bilge does not suck up water either. The pump makes a noise, but no action.

I test drove a 22v a few years back, and the stearing seemed effortless. With the 24 v it seems very rigid and jerky when going into a turn. I actually have to use both hands to steer it. Also when cruising straight, the steering wheel is turned to the left about a quarter turn. Is that normal? When in reverse the boat only steers to the right. I really have no control over it in reverse.

Sorry for all the questions but this is my first Tige or inboard for that matter and it is a whole new world. Appreciate the help. Been waiting to own one of these since I started on this board.

I cant answer all, but I will answer a few I know. Is there enough water for the bilge to suck up? It will only pump out water when its high enough.

You probably need a new steering cable. Its a problem most boats have, they wear out after a while, that could explain why its not centered either. All inboards except nautiques veer to the right in reverse, its just something you have to get used to.

      congrats on the new boat!

The water has to be pushed off of the rudder to steer the boat, so when the water is being pushed forward, you cannot steer. It will veer to the right every time. Use that to your advantage and come in at an angle and put it in reverse to slide her in sideways as you slow down. You'll get used to it.

It does sound like your steering cable has got some rust in it, or if it is jerky, you want to inspect it to make sure that it is not binding on something at the rudder. I had a piece of bilge trash once lodge itself at the rudder and stop me from being able to steer properly. Scared the heck of me on Lake Powell. Only being able to turn one direction when 12 miles from the marina tends to worry me.

I hope someone can guide you on the coolant thing. All that I can say is that when a closed cooling system loses coolant...then it is no longer a closed cooling system. Hopefully it is not leaking into the engine. Did you have a mechanic inspect it before purchase?

Does the ballast pump turn on? What kind of pump is it?
      Be excellent to one another.

Thanks guys. The ballast pump turns on for a second then turns off. But when it does turn on, it does not sound like the others. As far as the bilge goes, I was wondering about not enough water being in the back of the boat. There was some. It would have been alot for my bayliner as it took about 2-3 minutes to drain at the boat launch. But when in water it did not cover the whole suction part of the pump.

I need to put more hours on it to find out more about the coolant. I noticed that the vent line may have spewed some out as there was traces in the hose. So after this weekend I will know for sure.

So when steering, the rudder should move buttery smooth under throttle? not rigid and tension like? When I turn back from a turn it is smooth just not into a turn.

Have you taken the rad cap off when the motor is cold and checked the level in the heat exchanger? If this is low it will drain the overflow tank when the motor cools off until it is full. It is easier to just fill up the heat exchanger first. The steering problem, does it happen at spead or only when punching it and trying to turn at the same time? The boys at WWS will take good care of you!

I hope so. Cause the sales process was a bit of a chore and some fishy things were going on. But I trust Trev and Dunc there. Trev said he will take care of things and I trust him for his word.

The steering issue is at speed or gassing it. I am going to take a look at the cable to see if there needs any ajusting. Trev said the steering was stiff, but man I am getting a work out.

You can bet on the steering cable to be bad, and also for the coolant check the cap for holding preasure they can leak out the side.

How do the cables go bad? What can you do to prevent this?

Cables are made of metal. They sit in the bilge. The bilge gets water in it. Water + metal = rust. The more you use it, the better it will steer. Most first visits out after winter everyone has to work the steering to loosen it up a bit.

The bilge pump will need about 2-3 inches of water before it will actually pump. Fill it up in your driveway if you want to test it. It is probably working fine.

If you smelled coolant, then it is likely leaking somewhere. You can't smell coolant burn, but you will smell it when it evaporates off something hot. If the engine had manifold leak or similar, then the boat would blow white thick smoke when you started it up. Did you notice any of that? If you did, then you have a leaking gasket or similar.

Usually, it's from water sitting in the bilge. I'd empty it. On my boat, there's a drain plug you can reach from the inside right by the V-Drive. I'm not sure about your model.

the drain plug on the 24v is right above the taps plate- you cant reach it from the inside.
