    Steering Cable

My 2006 22VE has become impossible to steer after only 71 hours. I have been told my steering cable needs to be replaced. I have been told this is a common problem. Anyone else experice this?

Yes definately. Not after 71 hours though. Sounds like its the steering cable for sure. You wont believe the difference after you change it. There is another thread on here about replacing it.

      Response Time

Thanks for your quick response. Looking forward to that awesome, tight turning ability when I first dropped in the water a year ago. I am not, however looking to spend $650 for the cable, especially if it will only last for 7o hours!!

WOW $650 I think ours for our 21i was about $120!

Ahhh I see well if you wanted to save yourself the $530 you probably could do it yourself. You have a V drive so access to the rudder is a little easier than an I. Its fairly simple just pull out the old pull in the new. Could take maybe 30min to an hour.

              22 VE

I have a VE, not a V. I have been told its a 5 hour job!? Since I'm no mechanic, I'm not smart enough to know the difference. I certainly have my doubts!!!!!!!

O WOW I didn't know that a V was so much different than a VE.

It seems odd to me that the steering cable got tight after so few hrs. The tight steering cable issue is common though, it just usually takes longer for the cable to tighten up.

I don't know if changing it on a VE requires pulling the fuel tank out of the way, if so, that's why it takes so long. It probably isn't all that difficult, but it does require poking around in deep dark spaces in your boat.

Maybe Lee will chime in here and help.

If you ever need a job come to Nashville. Only on a 22i have we ever done one in one hour.

If a bilge stays wet there is a chance that water will seep into the steering cable and cause it to freeze up.

We did our 21i in about 2 hours flat. Just because my dad's and i's arms were hardly long enough to reach the nuts and bolts back there. So it took several attempts to get the bolts on and off. If we ever do it again we could probably do it in an hour. I figured because it was a V-drive access to the rudder might be easier but i wasnt aware that VEs are so much different.
