BOAT DOWN! Please help..

OK if you have undone the shift cable at the transmission and put it in gear by hand and that has made no change.(boat won't go) double check that the shaft is turning at the same rate as the coupler inside the boat under load.(In the water) Doesn't have to come off the trailer. You can if you want to. If it is all turning as it should. Pull the prop just to be sure the key is good. If the key is good. Get your check book out. or prepare to get dirty. Because I think you need a pump in the transmission. and all the alignment stuff will need redone anyway. I am a "might as well guy" If it were mine " might as well" rebuild the entire thing while you got it out. while the V drive is out "Might as well" look inside that also. Do it one time.

I say "might as well" a lot. but my point is you wouldn't want to go through all the work of pulling all the parts getting it all lined back up then 2 years later have the clutch pack fail. Then you got to do it all over again. This time it is kinda good timing close to the end of the year. When will it happen next time? If you use the" Might as well" approach you will will eventually have a boat you can get a lot of use out of before you have to work on it again.....This might be a little different when you don't do the work your self.but not really. The shop will have it on the floor. pay now for a pump.lets say 500.00 or pay later new trany 1000.00 plus the 500 for the pump that got pitched. I am sure you get what I am saying. sometimes you can afford "Might as well" sometimes you just got to roll the dice.

Thanks for all the help guys. I want to try and eliminate all other options before I do a transmission rebuild or vdrive.
So I have marked a line on the shaft, coupler and propeller to check for slipping. I put the boat back in the water to have load on the propeller. All of the lines stayed telling me there is no slip where I have marked.

As I was checking this I noticed water would shoot out of the boot when I moved it. Is this anything of note?

I took a video of the water test I did today. What the heck is that sound?

I am going to guess and say you need a new pump in the transmission. Now mind you. I have not looked at the boat in person and making a guess on the info you are giving me.I think if it was in the v drive it would work or wouldn't or make a lot of noise or something like that. Altho the PSS system is working like it should "might as well" switch it to a dripless system.

I may be of no help here, but the oil that was pictured above coming from the transmission doesn't seem right to me. I know that my 21v's v-drive uses standard SAE-30 non-detergent oil, but the transmission itself uses Dexron III ATF fluid. You may have a different transmission than me, but just something I noticed.

If the seals inside the transmission are in similar condition as the shaft bellows, I would be tempted to try some Lucas or similar Transmission Fix as this will renew/lubricate the o-ring on the tranny poston and other soft parts and maybe give enough seal to get you by. At this point you have nothing to lose, and at least it may pinpoint the issue giving you confidence that it is the Tranny? Based on the hours and age of the boat, 0-ring/seal shrinkage would not be a suprise...

I took the boat out to check the level of oil in the transmission while running and the level was fine. The guy I bought the boat from said he did a transmission oil change 20 hrs ago, but the oil did look dirty so I drained it. I put AC Delco Dexron 6 back in to the transmission and still have the same problems. Should I put some transmission fix in there? I am thinking I need a transmission rebuild.

If this was mentioned I appologize as you said you took it to the lake again but wanted to make sure you knew not to try to warm vdrive or trans fluid out of the water. You’ll burn up your cutlass bearing(holds the shaft in the strut) best to only turn the prop(under power) on the lake. You can have someone spray water on it while running but it’s not as good heat control IMO.
As mentioned above trans takes ATF, should be red. 30w in the drive is brownish.
Time to rehab your PSS shaft seal. That boot is hammered and I’m sure the other components are worn out too.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the help! I pulled the transmission out and took it to a local mechanic. He took it apart and there was damage on the clutch belleville spring and the forward clutch cylinder. I bought new parts and a seal kit. Now I just need to put everything back together.
I want to replace my prop shaft seal though. Any thought on where to find one? Mine does not seem to have any water lines plumbed to it? I have pictures on the seal in this post as well.

Call and talk to them. They are extremely helpful. Be sure to replace yours with the "wet" style that has the waterline going to it.
