    330HP Excalibur vs 340HP Vortec

I am looking at 2 different 24Vs - the 2005 has a 340 hp vortec engine and the 2006 has a 330 Excalibur engine. Both have about 70 hours. I am not familiar with the Excalibur engine. Any opinions on which engine is the better motor for reliability and performance?

They are both GM 5.7 ltr 'iron dukes' so I think they will both serve you well for many years. I have not driven the 330, but I don't think 10 hp will be much of a deal. IMHO

Give us some pics when you choose.

They are both dependable the pcm looses a little hp due to the pulley driven waterpump vs crank driven. Dom@ Fortes Inboard Connection

I have the pcm 330 excalibur. I have loved it so far about 170hrs. It seems to have good grunt at altitude and runs strong. I have friend with Malibus and mcs and all three boats pull about the same, I don't know exactly what motors they are running. I am happy with my pcm.

From my observations of the many different mfgrs of engines and boats, the PCM is highly respected and traditionally commanded a premium. But the Marine Power 340 hp has also been nearly flawless in the three years that it has been offered by Tige. The Merc had too many issues and poor customer service. Merc has also been conservative in their hp ratings and I think that hurt Tige sales too. PCMs were put in some '03 Tiges and then offered with MP and Merc in '04 thru '06. I believe that PCM and Merc were dropped for '07.

Overall the PCM 330 cost more when that boat was purchased and might be preferred by some, but experience has shown that the MP 340 has equal or better perfomance and dependibility.

Thank you all for your input. It is still a toss up which boat we will choose - should know in a week or so.

Some day I hope they get away from useing HP as the measurig stick. Generally speaking it is torque that propells your boat onto plane. 330 or 340 there both 350cu. They have a 3.48 stroke which has about 370 ft lbs of torque. Your 6.0l is basically a stroker motor with the same bore as the 350 but with a 3.62 stroke giving it about 400 ft lbs. They are all good motors just different on how they are prepared for marine use.

                Question from a novice boarder

which is more important - hole shot or constant boat speed.
By simple definition, torque gets you moving and horsepower keeps you moving.

Most important to me is a motor that starts when the key is turned on and stops only when the key is turned off. Constant speed is controlled by Perfect Pass. As for the whole shot, I will just hang on untill I am up.
It appears both motors meet my needs equally and I should be happy with either one.

Actually, torque helps keep you moving as well. You don't really have a multi-gear transmission in these boats, so the most important thing is your torque curve.

At least, that's my understanding (but I'm no expert...I'd defer to Lee, who knows everything, or Dom, who answers all of our questions)

                      Torque

Dogbert is correct Torque is all important. Horsepower is torque X Revs, lower torque motors compensate by higher revs. As boats do not have multiple gears like a car you can not drop down gear and increase the revs. Hence torque is all important unless you are redlining it.

the broader and lower the rev the engine produces torque the better for heavy work like pulling out the hole.

unfortunately very few accurately rate at the prop

That's cool! That's the most people I have seen behind a Tige. We pull 3 on occassion.

That is the most I have seen also. I was one of six once, but that was behind an x-star. Only a Tige could pull seven...

We actually started out with 9 but had a little rope problem. Put those 2 in the boat and went on with 7. It only took 3 tries to get them all up. Here are a few more photos.
