Missing impeller fins

I just got around to replacing my impeller after failure at the end of last season. I opened up the housing and the impeller was pretty much bare of fins. On 2 partially remained, the rest were gone. There were some pieces of it in the housing, but not near enough to account for the entire thing.
I assume this happens, and the pieces just got flushed thru the system? Is this something I should worry about, is there someplace I should check for the rest of the carnage?

I would check your transmission oil cooler. The holes in these are fairly small and the pieces likely didn't pass but will foul or reduce the flow. On my 05 22v marine power 340 it's located below the exhaust header starboard side. Here is pic of what it may look like. Part of my winterizing process I disconnect the hose from the v-drive cooler to the transmission oil cooler. I do this to drain any water that may still be in the v-drive cooler and check for debris in transmission cooler. This past season I did have a little crud but nothing major. Also, I believe there is a fuel cooler too that looks similar and is top starboard corner of the motor. This is assuming you have same marine power 5.7 vortec. Hope this helps and good luck.

Local dealer told me to watch for this too....or in reality I should bring it to him because this is a major problem of overheating.

So let me see....my raw water impeller is above the trans cooler....(water from bottom of boat...through cooler and then impeller is next in line after cooler).

So if any pieces broke off....they are far beyond the trans cooler and never even came close to clogging it up.

If anything....any pieces could be lodged in water galleries....water pump...or most likely....kicked out of the exhaust cooling without even knowing.

Any large pieces would never make to fuel cooler.....small hole.

Dealers like to scare ya into spending money.

The trans coolers on the mercruisers are on the pressure side of the pump where marine power put them on the suction side. Mercruiser fuel cooler is not a bundle and will pass blades but the trans cooler is ahead of the fuel cooler and will catch everything beforehand.
