Spring Maintenance- How do you get ready for summer?

    ALCON,

Got the Tige out for the first time this year with Brad.. everything was running pretty awesome... Better than at the Mead Reunion when I had every issue in the world.. but still ended up being the best trip I have had yet (I actually had to tow in XPjim- sorry Jim! Can't remember the rest of your handle, hope that is right).. Anyway.. wanted to throw some pics up from the trip and talk about the Prop Seal Shaft... That was one of the issues last year... I was able to re-set it with the help of an Allen wrench and some knowledge from Steve (Stingreye) and got the thing to hold tight for the trip...

So what is the general rule of thumb on these? Mine is almost all the way compressed but it held just fine at the end of last summer...And when Brad and I went out this last weekend. I don't wanna readjust it if its holding just fine but I don't want to be caught short.. I will try to get in there and take some pictures...I know under bigger load these things want to drip more.

Basically, from what I have been told, mine is a PSS non-water fed that is supposed to drip when turning the prop... Just wondering since mine is at least as old as 2008... should I be concerned and just replace this with an updated version or keep with the OE stuff? Like I said.. I reset it in accordance to some stuff I was told via Steve...which was to push the shaft seal down until it touched the seal... then another 1/4 inch past that. Then put the 4 set screws in... I hate doing preventative maintenance when I don't need to... but like I said, I don't wanna be caught short..

Anyway.. enjoy the pics and here is what I have done so far this year... If I am missing something big let me know... I try to stay on everything I can.. Including cleaning! I have some trailer brakes to work on.. Put new Master Cylinder and all new brake lines in 2012... just need to add new Drum Brakes as the old ones are seized up... I never forget why I love/Hate my boat.. damn money tree in my front yard is looking pretty terrible (especially with the California Drought!)

    This year's Maintenance-

New Interstate batteries- Starter and Deep Cell

New fluids- Oil, Oil Filter, Taps & Transmission, V-drive

    New Impeller

New Spark Plugs- AC Delco MR43LTS

New Cover- Boat Cover from Westland

New Tower Speakers- Kicker KMT674 tower speakers since mine had some holes in them.. even though they still worked ok... Got them back in the box that I bought the new ones if anyone is interested in buying... They were the KMT6 model I believe...

Now I just ordered all my ballast stuff... but that will be a whole other thread.. Looking forward to some surfing this summer! Trying to get that 2100V LTD looking clean!

Mike, the PSS seals need to be changed every 5 years and if you don't have the water feed, update it and I'll walk you through how to add the feed from the exhaust riser 1/4npt port.
Btw, I get my boat ready for spring with a beer, smoked pork and a bottle of crown.
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

Interested to hear about the pss water feed upgrade. Mines just vented up to the engine bay

Do a search here. I replaced my "dry" PSS with the "wet" version a few years back due to a nasty sound that the dry version sometimes generated. PSS themselves state in their technical literature that the wet version should be used on planing hulls due to the possibility of an air bubble forming around the thruhull, causing the seal to run without water for cooling and lubrication. When we replaced mine, after only a few dozen hours of use, the face of the carbon seal was heavily scarred from running hot and dry.

Again, do a search. I have a detailed thread on here somewhere complete with photos of the install and the resulting waterstream coming out of the PSS while on the trailer.

No problem, it's the least I can do for two buds.

I don't know if mine is the same. I thought I took a photo to upload but apparently not :-( it doesn't have the bellows like what pss show. Mine has a length of rubber hose and 4 jubilee clips. It looks like a rubber seal held in by a circlip. theres a clear hose running up in the engine bay. It's an 06 20i .

Any thoughts what it actually is?

After much Google image searching it looks a kiwi shaft seal. Would a water feed be appropriate for this seal?

                    According to their website:

The Kiwi Shaft Seal™ is cold water (salt or fresh) lubricated through a water feed line. A SS water feed fitting is drilled and tapped into the seal housing for security. A stainless steel ball valve and tails are supplied with every unit to regulate the water flow rates for the different seal sizes.

Thanks Cory! Should I even attempt this myself though? I thought a prop alignment may be necessary afterwards? Or is that only if I mess something up? Also, any ideas on if I should buy the parts and bring to a boat shop or just bring the boat to them since they'll probably get better deal on parts then I will be able to? Sound like I need to just bring it to long beach and pay you to help me do it if that service comes with beer and smoked pork...

I just scheduled my PSS Dripless install for Wednesday... Hoping to have the surf ballast done and ready by the Memorial Trip to Lake Mohave! Who else is coming?! I know TheGerman618... BlackWidow... just seeing who else is going?! I only have myself at the moment and possibly one female friend will be joining.. I will be down to help transport someone if anyone wants to carpool! Sounds like we will be camping 6 miles from Cottonwood Cove! Anyone interested let me know... Four 1 Zero-two 3 one - 1 two 11.... Text me ASAP... I would like to go from 21 May thru 26 May to avoid traffic and make sure to get some great water.... Might end up grabbing a room that Monday and Tuesday if the camping becomes too much and the price is right! I am game for just about anything.

I believe you can remove the propshaft without having to realign. Realignment involves the relationship of the engine/transmission to the thruhull and strut, AFTER which the propshaft just threads the needle so to speak. Could someone please confirm this?

Alignment needs to be done anyway. Here's how to replace PSS for either v drive or inboard:
                            - loosen the Allen head set screws in the PSS collar keeping in mind there are two set screw holes and 4 set screws, two outer and two inner. Move the collar up the shaft close to the coupler.
                            - loosen the prop shaft set screws on the prop shaft woodruff key way
                            - remove the prop
                            - use a heavy slide hammer attached to the prop shat where the prop nuts locate and pull the shaft away from the coupler
                            - remove the stainless collar
                            - loosen the 2 hose clamps on the shaft bellows and remove the graphite collar by sliding it up the shaft
                            - replace the dry PSS system with the water feed graphite collar and tighten the hose clamps on the bellows
                            - install stainless shaft collar but don't tighten
-locate shaft back into coupler and tighten set screws
                            - run water feed hose up to exhaust elbow and remove one of the 1/4" npt plugs at the base and reinstall a 1/4npt to 3/8"barb and connect the hose
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...
