Well it seems to be fixed. I replaced the shift spool o-ring and haven't noticed any more leaking. Thanks to Lee, M. D., and Baker for your help.

It took about 30 minutes because I wasn't positive on what exactly to unscrew from "the other side" as lee mentioned earlier. Now that I've done it I can say it is a definate DIY project. I also had help from an exploded view of the tranny I found on the internet that showed all the parts of the tranny.

The shifter spool o-ring sounds like the problem, but there is no way to get the shaft out from the "other side". I seems to me that the trans will need to be disassembled to get to the shaft.

Nope, just like stated before. It slides right out, replace o-ring and slide back in.

do an internet search to find an exploded view of the tranny. That helped me a lot.

Did you have to replace the gasket under the valve cover when putting the cover back on? And was it hard to keep from dropping the ball that sits behind the shift lever

I did not replace any gaskets and I do not remember having a hard time putting it back together. As I recall, once I found where eveything was, it was very easy.

Thanks for this thread, I had the exact same problem and the fix was very simple, the only advise I could offer to this repair is make sure you cover the fill hole while doing this repair because if the ball behind the shift lever was to fall into this hole while removing the shift lever, this simple repair could become a very expensive repair. Other than that very easy repair, $1.00 seal, and 15 minutes later up and running.

I'm having the same issue on my "01 21V. Looking at the blow-up of the Merc parts, I don't see any o-ring... http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...+Related+Parts

Am I looking at the wrong diagram? Engine: OL675400

Does anyone know the part number of this "shift spool o-ring"?
                  Thanks!

It is not a Merc part. Probably a Borg Warner transmission and Walter V drive. Look on your trans and drive. They should have id plates.

                      That would make sense.

For future reference... and my own edification I assume that the O-ring is part 40 on this diagram? Further, by removing from the "other side" this is accessed by removing part 33? Thanks again!

Here is where I ended up finding the parts.
                              O-ring:
                              http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/p/ALT1390734/
                              Original part # is 4804H

Also get the gasket for the access plate. You might not need to replace it but you'll have it:
                              http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/p/ALT23022/
                              Original part # is 71-14

It was an easy fix. Just make sure you have a catch pan or another set of hands incase you drop the shift detent bearing.

                              THANKS jsz!

Do you remember what you told them to look for or did you just bring in the old parts? I'm scared of that damn ball thing dropping now..is it really hard to see or notice.. I'm sort of a clutz at times.. haha.
