Buy the boat that you have a connection to. If it feels right just do it. You can try to find the best deal out there and before you know it the boat you really wanted is gone.
It is getting close to the time of year where boat prices are going to start to increase. As the temperatures start to increase so do boat prices.

Also, what's the relationship between hours and price. Let's say I find another 2008 20V exactly the same as the one I first posted except it has twice the hours (280) =assuming $32K is a reasonable price for the same boat with 142 hours, what price hit does the second boat take. Is the price hit exponential if it is 4 times the hours (560 hours). Sorry if these questions are basic but if I don't know, I'm gonna ask.

And based on my research, 800 hrs is when you will start to see mechanical issues, is this accurate?

I thought your quote was from Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation when he was buying lingerie, I looked it up and see it is Caddyshack.

My experience with hours is that a well kept and maintained gas marine engine will last well past 1,500 hours. I think it really comes down to how clean the boat is, is the vinyl in good condition, is the gel coat clean and free any damage.
There are a lot of guys on here that will tell you a boat that is 6-8 years old with low hours, i.e. below 100 will probably need more work than the boat with over 350 hours. The more you run the engine the better.

OK. Thanks everyone for the comments. Unfortunately I'm travelling a lot the next couple of weeks but will do a test drive on the 2008 20V on Jan 31. I'll report back on any decision. I may try and get to tennesee that weekend to look at the 24V. In the mean time I'll continue to look online.

Agreed. The overall condition of the boat is usually (not always) an indication of how well the owner has taken care of the drivetrain, too. Personally, I look at the condition of the bilge - the inside surface of the hull down by the engine, transmission, and v-drive. I want to see "spotless". No muck, no discoloration, no oil spills, nothing. If the owner is meticulous enough to keep the bilge clean, a part of the boat that most people will never see, then he's probably also careful to service and maintain the drivetrain properly.

I would also dip the tranny and v-drive fluids and check for particulates, foam, etc. It's quick and easy and only requires tools you can bring with you. A quick wipe of the oil dipstick can also tell you a lot. Basically, you're looking for tell-tale signs that things were maintained properly - or not.

              Hope this helps!

The first boat I bought was an 1980 Ski Supreme in 1981 and sold it in 2004 with 2800 hours on it. Never had any engine problems with it, just changed the starter once and had the carb rebuilt once. I did change the oil and filter once a year and tune ups about every three or four years.

I've been a jet skier for 20 years but I'm 50 now and my Seadoo 96 XPs are a little rough on me and have decided it's tome for a boat. I'd like to get a starter wakeboard/surf boat for my kids to see if they like it so I'm looking for comments on this deal.

                    Is it a good deal?
Is it a good starter boat for a couple of years before we take a big plunge?

We would likely have 6 people on it most of the time.

Vortec 5.7L 315 hp engine, ballast system, cruise, Stereo, tower speakers, cover, and trailer w/brakes.

                    Thanks in advance.

my opinion is this. get a 22ft boat for 6 people. I love reading the max capacity of people on boats. but I tell you what.... 6 people all day on a 20v is just not my idea of a great day. I have a rz4 and I think 8 is just right... I dont like being packed like sardines on a boat. (unless they are all in bikinis and hot!)

again my worth. take it as you will.

Bikinis and Hot makes a big difference! Six people on my Z1 is fine but anymore gets crowded.

OK, so the bikinis comment made me think I may need a bigger boat (insert Jaws joke here). I haven't looked at the 20v yet, will do that on Friday, but I came across this boat. Average/Good/Great deal? I'm gonna swing by and look at this one on Friday as well. I'm patient so I can wait on a great deal, no issues. BTW for the 2008 20v, what would I pay to make it a great deal? What about this RZ4? Yes I've looked at NADA, but I'm getting a low retail of $79,000 for the RZ4.

Update: there is no trailer on the RZ4 and I believe that will tag on an additional $4500 (about)

By the time I had time to look at it, it was off of Craig's list.
