    2008 20V

I'm looking at a 2008 20V with 142 hours for $32,000. I've been a jet skier for 20 years but I'm 50 now and my Seadoo 96 XPs are a little rough on me and have decided it's tome for a boat. I'd like to get a starter wakeboard/surf boat for my kids to see if they like it so I'm looking for comments on this deal.

    Is it a good deal?
Is it a good starter boat for a couple of years before we take a big plunge?

We would likely have 6 people on it most of the time.

Vortec 5.7L 315 hp engine, ballast system, cruise, Stereo, tower speakers, cover, and trailer w/brakes.

    Thanks in advance.

I am by no means an expert on boats, however depending on your market I truly believe you can find either a better deal or a better boat for that money.

The 20V will be a good fit for you from the sounds of it. Given that it has the 315, I would look at the prop. The stock prop would have been the ACME 537, which is 13.5 x 16. With people and ballast, you may find it will struggle if its still got the 537. Even more so if you will be boating at any kind of elevation. I would certainly make an offer on this boat.

Its not in NC by the way?

We have, and love, a 96XP (and a 97GSX too). That 96XP is a classic! I'm a wee bit older than you and still ride ours pretty hard. Don't get rid of it, just ride it a bit less aggressively.

...AND get a boat, because now that you have kids you need a multiperson water platform. Been exactly where you are (no kids, then kids), did exactly what you're doing (bought used, then later bought new), and wouldn't change a thing.

Edit: OK, one difference... our pre-parenting water activity was whitewater kayaking, not jetskis. The jetskis came after our son arrived, as part of our transition to powered watersports. But like jetskis, whitewater kayaking isn't exactly child friendly so I completely understand what you're doing.

Dandy, I've been looking at marinas in my area and online for 2 months and haven't found many boats in the 30K range that seemed like a better deal than this one. Of course my knowledge is very limited as I indicated so I need to rely on advice from friends and online forums.

Chpthrl, I'm in Birmingham, boating on Smith Lake primarily, so I hope the elevation is an issue, didn't know that elevation could be an issue. I'm originally from Satellite Beach, FL so elevation has never been a consideration for me. When you say make an offer, what offer would you make?

WABoating, you nailed my problem, I still ride the XP like I was 30. If I had a place on the lake I'd keep the XPs but I can't trailer all 3. Eventually as the kids get a bit older I'll look at maybe getting the larger engine SeaDoo Spark. I've heard good things about their ride. I agree I've never been on a more fun ski than my 96XP.

I think it's a good deal on an 08 with 142 hrs. It will be enough room for 6 and should make a great starter boat.

I dont know whats a good price for that boat, but wuth spring aproaching, demand goes up, prices go up. Elevation rods horse power and a prop upgrade will help get some of the lost performance back. I dont see AL being an issue, but loaded for surfing can exceed the 537's capabilities.

Well, you CAN trailer all three, but we'll all make fun of you at the boat ramp ....

Seriously though, a boat is the way to go. Good luck in your search, and don't be afraid to ask questions here. Everyone is friendly and helpful and ready to answer questions!

Wow that trailer setup is a trip.

Thanks for the boat links. I guess that brings up the question of buying local from a dealer that I'll be using for service; should I strive to buy local or will my local dealer service(happily?properly?) whatever I bring in from wherever I buy?

Buying used, I dont see buying local just for the future service.

Did you price it up on nada.com? I just did it quickly and it priced the boat with trailer right at $34,000 for Birmingham.

I did not purchase my 08 rz2 from my dealer. Was he bummed yeah but he understands that when buying a boat/major purchase that color and options are key. Now with that said he has done everything he could to get me to buy a new boat. He has definitely won me over and I purchased a new boat from him. His service and character was top notch.

I did price it on NADA and got about $34K and most of the 2008 @20Vs I've seen online are well above $32k (35-38)

Lee, I've searched in Tenneesee for Tiges and haven't found that deal, boattrader.com and onlyinboards.com and don't see that deal. Shall I infer that you agree that either the boat is over priced or too small? Do you have a link for the 24V you are referring to.
