    24Ve Motor Size?

I am looking to purchase a 24Ve and noticed varying motor sizes from 315 to 375. Is there a "gold standard" for the proper motor size of a 24Ve? I would be looking at a 2006 or newer. Would probably have an average of 7 people on the boat at a time (half adults) and wakeboard 90% of the time.

I've owned a tige 21v with the regular merc 350, I think it was rated at 315hp. I now have an axis a22 with the ls3 at 450 hp. If you can, I would choose the bigger engine every time. There's just no comparison on how the boat runs when empty or fully loaded.

Agreed on the "choose the bigger engine every time" when you have that choice. As I'm fond of saying, "I've never wished for a smaller engine".

That said, I have a 2009 24Ve with one of the most extreme ballast systems of which I'm aware, and I have the PCM EX343 (343 HP) with the Acme 1235 prop. We've surfed with well over a dozen people on board - some of them 250+ pounders (I'm thinking of one particular large family with all their kid's spouses and grandchildren) - and never had a problem coming right up. Seven people isn't even noticeable.

Based on my personal experience, I'd say anything 343+ HP would be fine. Don't ignore the prop, it has a LOT to do with how well the whole system (hull, load, engine) works.

My boat and ballast is a bit extreme, but with 5,000lbs of ballast, full fuel tank, and 4 people on board, I can get up on plane and up to 23mph within 15 seconds. Thats unheard of with any engine smaller, regardless of prop. I do have the 1235 prop also. Thats considered the hi altitude prop for malibu/ axis. A buddy has same boat, same prop but with a 330hp engine, his boat won't plan out at all with around 4,000lbs.

Now even if you don't run huge ballast and you just have the regular stock prop, its always nice to have a higher top speed to be able to jump behind an i/o on a choppy day. My boat with the higher pitch prop runs at 45mph top speed. stock prop would be up close to 50. Just remember, a 24 footer is already pretty heavy to begin with. Load up the people, the weight can really add up quick. I would really water test both engines too see what your needs are. However, your needs can change later on down the road.

24VE is a big boat. I would want as much engine as I could. After being in a RZ4 with the 343 PCM I can say i wouldn't own a 24VE with a 315 in it. The RZ4 struggled with the 343 and couldn't imagine having less, I don't think you'd be happy with the boat.

This is what I would say. I have a 22ve with 343. It's enough, but not overkill when fully loaded. Add 2 ft and take away 50 cuin (350V8 vs 305V8) which is mostly a loss in torque, it would be something I would shy away from.

There isn't a 305 ci option. Smallest would be the 350 ci/ TBI motor at 315hp. As far as I know the only 305 ci motor you will find in a modern tow boat is the PCM 303hp that was available in the R20/RZR prior to 2014.

My bad. If this is the case, it's likely that the torque and HP curves are close except for the higher RPM, so for the majority of running there wouldn't be much difference IMO.

The Merc 315 used in Tiges was MPI, but was long gone I believe, by time the Ve model was released. I think the smallest motor in a Ve would be the 320HP, which is the Marine Power 5.7L. It was offered in 07 or 08. MP did offer a carb's 5.7L in 07, but dont recall the HP.

In the parameters you stated I would get as much motor as you can. As others have stated once you add fuel, ballast, people, and gear, you will need all the HP and TQ you can get.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Most of the 24Ve's I've found (boattrader for example) either have a 330 or a 340. One has a 375 (which I checked out, but did not pull the trigger). I'm trying to figure out if I would be happy with a 340 (with the right prop), or if I have to find one with a 375? My buddy has a 22v that has a 340 and that is perfect. I have (3) boys under 13, so I do see having 7-9 people on the boat consistently, but I don't see riding with 4,000 lbs ballast (I think it will be a few years until the boys will push these limits). Definitely appreciate all of your advice. Thanks!

We have a PCM 343 in our 24VE & never had any problems getting around. I'd do it again unless the next size up wasn't much more $.
