I had a customer two winters ago drain his own block and leave the knock sensor out dangling in the water all winter. The spring start up his alarm was sounding and turned out to be a faulty knock sensor.

First off, the knock sensor will not trigger an alarm but instead tell the ECM to retard timing so that won't be it. However, we have found the ECM will throw a code and alarm for low fuel pressure as well as the items we discussed last year. See if you can borrow a fuel pressure gauge that reads above 60 psi and test it under the same conditions.
I was hoping you'd see this as I knew you'd be interested . I do have a buddy that runs a automotive shop here in town that might have one.

I was able to get my hands on a code reader and software late last fall, but was unable to get it out on the water before the snow came. The only problem that I can foresee with the diagnostic tool is I'm not sure what I'll be looking for when we get it out on the water and the alarm sounds. I'm assuming it'll be obvious, but I guess I would need some coaching on what to look for there. If the weather gets above 60 this weekend I might get it out on the lake Saturday to get some questions answered.

OK, was just thinking I might be able to help out but you're a little far for loaning a tool

Yeah, a bit far for that. Very much appreciate the thought though. I'm pretty sure my buddy has one at his shop. We probably should do a Wyoming meet up though sometime.

Automotive scan tool and marine scan tool are different.

I do have the marine scan tool. I used it last fall just sitting in my garage and I collected all the data. However, none of it will help me as the alarm doesn't happen until boat is under load. None of the mechanics can ascertain anything from the codes that are stored and have said they would have to water test it

Boatwakes, what should I see for fuel pressure?

                      Update

im cautiously optimistic but it appears as though my problem has been fixed. As I stated before I pulled the knock sensor went to my local Carquest and got a replacement. I've been on the water twice now airs ran perfectly. Yesterday I took it up to 5000 rpms and kept it there for several minutes and it didn't sound the alarm. Normally 30 seconds at 5000 rpms and it would have gone off. So, so far it looks like it was the knock sensor.
