Thumping when first put into gear..then goes away??

Seen this question asked before but..

Day before yesterday we adj. the prop shaft seal (allens + 1/8" wrench + rent a midget' to get under there)..now about 2 boat hours later I'm getting

this slight thumping when I first put it in gear. Any throttle...like barely and the thump STOPS. Everything SMOOTHES OUT nicely. Kinda scary hearin' anything in the drive

Did I fk' up the Prop Shaft seal?

Boat has never had any mechanical drive problem...300 hours and tons of maintainance (drive fluids/oil etc every other month....well almost..)

Leave off the cover over the transmission/v-drive and have a stick or rod handy that can reach back to the shaft seal. Have someone else cause the noise, and then very lightly touch the rubber bellows and/or carbon ring of the seal. If the sound stops, you've probably got a rough spot on the face of either the carbon or stainless ring.

I will say this..we only moved the collar up 1/4" after I measured it yesterday

Seems unlikely it would be a rough spot..but I'll try that.

Might that be a bit dangerous sticking something on a moving prop shaft?

I will also say it made NO NOISE WHATSOEVER before we did the adjustment. You could pop into gear and it was indeed VELVET' SMOOTH

...so it might just be the seal location

That's why I said to "very lightly touch the rubber bellows and/or carbon ring of the seal". The bellows and carbon ring don't rotate, only the stainless ring does.

          oh. I'll be damned haha

If that's the source I might just re-adjust it right then

I want some extra screws. Anyone know the size off hand?
