    Newbie here looking to purchase

    Greetings,
As the title says, I'm in the market for a ski/wakeboard boat and have my eye on a pretty nice option. It's a 2003 24v Riders Edition with only 60 hours. It looks to be in great shape the only thing really missing is any ballast system and some sort of travel cover. The owner wants $27,500.

Two questions, is that a good price for the year and hours. Secondly, it has the 5.7 and I'm a little concerned that that size a boat it might be a little under powered?? Any thoughts or look fors would be greatly appreciated.

    Wyo.

I love my 24V. Several people put lots of weight and the 5.7 when propped correctly seems to do well.

No ballast system is actually a good thing. Factory system of that era had its issues. You will get a better system by installing a new one.

Don't be surprised if the vinyl at the seams is coming apart. Very common on all the Tige's I looked at of that era.

I am not sure if that's composite (my 2004 is for sure) or if it was when they were still using wood. It would be slightly benefitial to have the composite but IMHO its more perception. You don't see any threads on here of the old wooden construction having trouble really.

I would look at the hour with some skepticism. Get it hooked up to the computer. My boat with around 150-160 hours reset about 10 hours ago. So my boats hour meter only shows 10. It was correct when I bought it and just randomly reset on me. No idea why.

That being said, even if the hours are higher, IMHO that boat is till priced well if its clean and everything works (check TAPS for sure on your water trial). I paid slightly more than that for mine a year and a half ago and the likely biggest difference would be the upgraded motor in mine.

When I bought mine I paid around $500 for a marine survey and it was worth it to me for the peace of mind.

GOOD LUCK! Post up some pics if you get it. Also the Lake Meade Reunion is in Sept!

Thanks so much for the answers, quite helpful. I'm thinking if I do go through with it I would be getting the inspection. The boat is actually in CA and I'm in WY so getting an inspection before I get on the road would be best.

It does have the teak swim platform and I've heard good things about them they just look older. However, every few years some sanding and finish and they will look brand new.

I'm wondering if the inspection would be able to check the hours??

I'm still a little concerned about the motor but hopefully others who is this please have the 5.7 will chime in.

My main concern would be the 60 hours over 10 years. If the hours are correct that is 6 yours per year and that would take a very particular person to be sure that it gets the correct treatment (lube, storage, etc). Or the hours aren't correct.

I would ask some very specific questions about the hours. Either one of the two situations above is correct...

As to the 5.7 motor. It's the same base motor in 10s of thousands of boats around. That wouldn't be any worry. It's if maintenance was followed...

What part of CA? Maybe one of us can put a set of eyes on it?

It's located in Redlands CA. Near san Bernadino. Anyone around there, that would save me some serious coin.

I'm a little paranoid regarding the motor I guess. I currently have a nice 20 Mariah bow rider that has a 5.0 and I feel it's a little weak. But the 5.7 is quite a bit larger I guess.

I have a 2004 24V with the 6.0 PCM so I can't comment on the 5.7. What I can comment on though is that I live in Colorado and I'm not sure that I'd want anything smaller than the 6.0 at high altitude. I'm assuming that you are at a higher altitude than Denver. We use our boat for surfing, wakeboarding, tubing, and just hanging out listening to tunes. We don't slalom ski so we don't need to go fast. The prop will be the critical piece. Do your research and good luck!

Actually we're not too bad where I'm at, about 4,500ft. The prop would be critical and I'm not sure what is currently on the boat. What does a good prop run and what is a good pitch for doing those exact things you mentioned? I

do like to slalom ski but I'm not that good so it's not like I need the flattest wake. I would need to be at about 30 mph so I'd hope it would do that!!

I went with 1433 on the recommendation of the Tige dealer here. So far I can't complain, but if we do want to go fast the RPM's get pretty high.

A little more info I found out today. It is Marine Power 5.7l. Is that a Chevy product? I've read a bit about the motor and have heard good things. Was told to stay away from Mercs but that's all I've owned and they've done well for me.

Yes Marine Power is one of several brands that use the GM blocks. Ford exited the tow boat world a while ago and so even though you will see PCM, Marine Power, Ilmor, Indmar, etc. they are all marine version of a chevy block.

Regarding your power question, I think the biggest motor Tige put in the old 24Vs was a 6.0L and the general consensus is that you can't tell the difference until the RPM's get higher than you will usually use (something like 4k).

I am not too far from Redlands but I am buried with work (working this weekend) and can't get out there to check it out.

I think Duffy is at C'Ordelene and its about 2k, I think CDAWaves is around there too, MooseX deals with Tahoe's elevation. They all have 5.7L engines I think in their boats. I have never heard any of them talk about slaloming though.

                      Good luck!!

                        Stingreye,
Hey thanks so much. No worries, I think I'm gonna spring for the marine inspection anyway. I'll do some calling tomorrow and see what I can find. I just need to alter my quality world picture to include much more surfing and a lot less going fast .
