    Fuel Tank Replacement 2100v

We have a 2000 2100v Limited with only 220 hours. This past weekend we smelled the dreaded gas fume smell. We didn't park it as soon as we should have but all OK. Lots of gas in the bilge. After much diagnosis it was clear that the gas was coming out of the tank (not a fuel line). A major PITA but I got the tank out (had to remove Walter v-drive and pylon frame, then slide it out the stern). It is a 38-gallon tank made of aluminum made by Florida Marine Tanks (FMT-38-TIGE, P/N 50561-01).

So, I am looking at replacement options. FMT is still around. They quoted $450 plus $200 for a Ceramkote anti-corrosion coating (which I would gladly pay for). That's not too bad but the 6-week lead-time (and they're down for vacation next week) is a real bummer.

I'm looking at Moeller plastic options also but I'm worried about fit / dimensions.

Please give me some advice on replacement fuel tanks for a 2000 2100v Limited

    Thank you!

Look for someone local who is qualified to fabricate one and knows how otherwise you have to go with factory manufacturing and wait. In the mean time, just grab a 12 gallon above deck plastic tank and go. I would not suggest having smokers on the boat, though.
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

How bad is the leak/hole? Could you use a gas tank liner (at least until a new one is purchased)? I've used a product called Red Kote in several rusty old tanks on motorcycles and lawn mowers and had good luck. If the tank is out of the boat the hard job has been done, coating the tank just takes time and patients.

I found the hole last night. It is a pin hole on the bottom of the tank at the bow end. There is some rust in the area. It's near a weld but not a weld failure. I researched Red Kote and it looks like a good solution. I ordered both the Over Kote for the outside, then I'll apply the Red Kote to the inside of the tank. I will take all the time needed to get it right. This may be a $130 solution instead of an $800 solution!

In the meantime, I have a 12-gallon plastic tank ordered to keep us on the water until I get the below-deck coated.

Thank you both for the good advice. I'll let you know how things go with the coating.

I too have that same model and I am wondering if I need to be checking my tank. Is it common for tanks to leak? Any idea what caused yours too leak?

Thanks chpthril. Had no idea ethanol would do that to the tank. I try to run premium gas but you are saying even that can still contribute. Appreciate the advice - no more gas with ethanol in my boat!

I run Sta-Bil Marine in all my gas that contains ethanol and before winters, I change over to ethanol-free gas (plus Sta-Bil Marine) so there's no ethanol exposure during winter lay-up. I do attribute the leak to ethanol and 14 years of age.
