Temperature Gage rising at Low RPM?

HI All,

I've got a 2004 24V with 6.0L (about 230 hrs). Just had the boat out today for first time this season. Something I'm seeing is that at idle or low RPM (<1000) the temperature gauge is rising steadily up to 210-230. Once I get her up and running it stabilizes back to just above 175. This is my second year with this boat and I don't recall seeing this last season. Is it normal? Any ideas? I was thinking if it had a bad thermostat the temp would spike up regardless of RPM, but not sure.

Thanks everyone. I have my new mechanic coming today to replace that impeller. Kinda strange since it was supposedly changed last September when we finished for the season. Unless they didn't actually do the work...

Anything else to check? I never got a warning alarm for high heat, and no smoking of course. Also plenty of water exiting the exhaust.

For heaven's sake, replace the impeller yourself! Most of the time it takes either a 10mm socket or a Phillips screwdriver and about five minutes. Absolutely no reason to "have my new mechanic come today to replace that impeller". You'll spend 3x in labor what the impeller itself costs.

Never runn the engine without water!
If the boat is on the trailer, make sure you have your fake a lake installed first. Running the engine for just a bit on the ramp to remove water from it will KILL your impeller

Finally resolution. Last week replaced impeller, debris found in intake (cardboard pieces). Took boat out over weekend and started getting same problem. Guy came back out today and pulled the transmission cooler. He said it was "full" of crud, trash, weeds, etc. He blew it all out, replaced impeller again, and test ran at various rpm for maybe 20 min. All working well. Best thing - no charge. He said he should have pulled cooler the first time. Be careful to avoid lake debris! He said balloons are the worst offenders.

I was just gonna advise this but I read this thread too late. This is a simple job you can do by yourself. Takes about 15 minutes max.

I keep a spare and a impellar puller on board. My temp jumps around, always has. On my boat its a combo of cold water and the thermostat

Hey Ewok, I was wanting to add a raw water strainer on my boat. Is this a Tige specific part /kit or a generic item?

Not Ewok here, but Tige buys it from an off the shelf supplier (can't remember the name). Virtually every online marine parts dealer carries them.

I ordered mine from skidim.com when I was ordering my impeller for the year. You also need to order the barbs that screw into the strainer to hook the hose up to it. It's all on the ski dim website, or iboats.com, or probably overton's, and maybe Chpthrill from Mikes Liquid Audio (MLA). If MLA can get you one I'd order from him first.
