I love all the Nautique people screaming Tige copied the G23. Even now on the Tige owners site. Are there similarities..sure there is. Its a boat. It has to be made a certain way to go thru the water. If you want more wake it needs more ballast to push it deeper into the water. If you push it deeper into the water you need higher sides/more freeboard for safety. So sure they are going to look alike. Like someone said over on WW, like them all up 100 yards away and they all look awefully similar..then squint a little and try to tell the difference.

I especially like the comment that the ASR was an exact plug copy of the G23. That Tige had bought a G23 and made the mold directly from it. If only it was that easy I'd be making boats. Like Ewok said if they copied I am sure there will pending legal action. Making a direct copy of another manufacturers hull would IMO put you out of business. Between the lawsuits, fines, and then the loss of all credibility in a extremely competitive tow boat market. Tige couldn't possibly be that stupid when they were selling boats just fine before the ASR.

I know that you have already been called out on this once, but that is the dumbest reason to not own a boat brand that I have ever heard.

I have seen lots of ignorant Malibu owners, but I have the brains to not equate that with the boat manufacturer, or the boat itself. I also have seen idiots driving a Tige, but that doesn't mean I won't own a Tige.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but Tige was ahead of the curve as far as the deeper freeboard inboard boat. The Z3 seems to be the first boat to start getting deeper to accomodate the extra ballast for surfing. The G23 then kicked it up a notch further, and now we have the ASR, or Apex or whatever it is going to be called (I think they need some name recognition here). I think had Tige released this boat 2 years ago, it would not have been accepted very well. It would have seemed a radical departure from what was 'normal' at the time.
      Be excellent to one another.

I'll reserve my opinion of the new ASR until I can actually sit on it in person.

To be honest, Tige wasn't on my list when I decided to buy a surf boat. I am so glad that I went to the boat show and was able to sit on and physically go through each brand. During my first walk around, I didn't look at price tags, just the boats. Then I narrowed down the few I liked and walked them again and reviewed the price. The Z3 was by far the best boat for me and then the price was a ton better then any other "competitor.

Tige won me over and after a summer of use, I'm still sold. I've got friends with Master Crafts and Centurions that leave their boats and come surf with me.
They are die hard surf guys and just love the little things Tige has done to make an awesome boat.

I'll see the ASR at this year's boat show and I'm sure it'll be a great boat. Not going to give up my Z3 though. Not just yet.

So I got some wake pictures. The MyWake event was this weekend and the ASR pulled the wakeskate and wakeboard portions. After the event they used our Wake9 Z3 for chase duties to get some photos/video. RJ was on the chase boat and I was on shore and we snapped a few pics that show the wake fairly well. RJ also got some video on his iPhone. These are of Rathy and Dean Smith.

What some of you may or may not know is a few years back , Nautique purchased a 22VE and went all over that boat including haveing it at their dealers meeting , after they were done with that boat they sold it to a fellow in Jacksonville with no warranty, I receieved the boat to fix all the issues that Nautique created in their tear down inspection , so the question is how much of the G23 is convex and they have a trim plate!
Also Nautique use to tell there sales people that Tiges trim plate was a crutch for a bad hull design , so when I was at the first boat show with the new G23 I went up to the Nautique Rep and said so I see you added a crutch to your hull as I pointed at the plate.

There are only a few ways to make a 23' boat big enough to handle the ballast to make a huge wake. Boat trends have seen an evolution of the open bow concept to increase seating, and then the pickle forks to widen the bow to add more seating, and the blunt nose to get rid of wasted fiberglass in pickle forks to maximize the bow area (and the ability to add ballast under the seats in the bow as well). Tige also led/followed trends to bigger boats with higher freeboard in the Z3, which has a much higher freeboard than the RZ series. But trying to get the biggest bow and interior room and high freeboard leads a boat designer to that basic blunt nose shape and high freeboard as the Mojo, G23 and now the ASR.

If you look at any other industry you will see companies developing products that look similar, especially in the aircraft industry. First generation airliners were limited on the engines at the time so the fuselage could only be so big. When engine design caught up the widebody jet was created to efficiently carry more passengers. The wide body's of Boeing and Airbus look very similar to the untrained eye.

My point is, yes they look very similar, they are made to accomplish the same goals. If there was any direct copying I'm sure nautique will take appropriate legal action if it is warranted, but I don't think that's going to happen, I've been on a G23 and I see enough differences.

I hope Tige does not charge as much for one as Nautique, based on Tige's traditional place in the market is should be 15-20G's less, but if they do, I agree they better match up perfectly even on the fit and finish and quality control. If they don't they will take a well deserved beating on all the forums.
When evaluating the "similarities", you might also want to consider the hull shape. Take a look at it, it is a pretty darn close copy of the G hull. The ASR is definitely not Tige's typical Convex hull that they have marketed for years. The blunt nose shape was first around in the 70's, so there is no innovation there for any of these modern companies. Point is, the 3/4 side profile is not the only measure of their "similarities".

As for Tige charging as much as Nautique, I doubt they will. No offense, but the build quality would not warrant it. And they'd be silly to price it at the G23 level, because frankly I think they need a pricing advantage.

It would be really cool for tige to show a little 5-10 min video of the R&D of the new boat. I understand they used a new to them method of modifying and testing different hull shapes. It would be cool to have some interviews with the engineers and riders who's input drove changes to the test mule to get the wake they wanted.

I think it would be cool from an engineering/how stuff is made perspective as well as putting to rest the claims of copying from the G series.

They did this on the live stream, not sure if you saw it but they did go over this process. I havent seen the video of it anywhere though.

Thanks for the video Ragboy! I saw most of this footage during the reveal but I think this video has more shots of the test mule. I could have missed some due to streaming quitting once or twice.
