My 05 24V was manufactured 7/04. I was told they put Hurth transmissions in some of the early 24v's and then went back to Velvet Drive transmissions. Impression i got was not too many Hurths were used.

thanks for the info...do you know why they switched form velvet to hurth and then back?
I wouldn't buy a boat with a hurth. Velvet drive tranny is much better -- they a LOT quieter, take a lot more abuse and they been around a lot longer. Oh yeah, they're also built in the US. I bet the factory switched to hurth to save $ and then had to switch back 'cause they got so many complaints from their dealers. Glad to hear they switched back to velvet drive.
From what I hear Bu's have been having lots of hurth tranny issues . . . lots of noise and breaking right after warranty is up. Who wants to have a tranny breakdown in the middle of a weekend -- especially right after the warranty's out !!
I had a similar problem with the boat slowing down and sputtering. The transmissions are a little touchy and if they get low on fluid....sometimes just a cap full the transmission will skip causing the slowing down sensation. Add some fluid and see if that helps
Not to get you more confused but I'm told by my dealer that Tiges going to that little ZF tranny and vdrive to save a few dollars. The one I heard sounded like it had stones running on the inside. What a silly place to try to save a buck.

I'm looking through my lit, as i'm getting ready to winterize. I have one manual that reads: Marine Transmission owner's manual, BorgWarner VelvetDrive.
According to the tag, I have a model 10-17, 1:1 ratio V-Drive transmission (all-in-one). If I understand right, I do not have a trans bolted to a v-drive? does this sound right?
I would hate to overlook needed service

We had a an older sterndrive that sometimes would start slowing down with the throttle wide open. Finally located a split in the ribbed exhaust hose that was emitting a small stream of steam at full throttle. The air was so saturated with water it lost power. You couldn't tell it was leaking as there was no puddle of water anywhere. I opened the engine cover while someone else drove and saw the cloud of steam. A cracked exhaust pipe, leaky gasket or loose hose connection could cause a similar result. Just something to keep in mind when troubleshooting.

Thanks for the reply. Next question, which is getting serviced with the 2+ qts of Dexron lll, V-drive or Trans? And what is the service procedure for the 'other' if any.
Thanks Lee.
