Clicking noise in V-Drive at low RPMs

I'm hearing a clicking noise coming from my V-Drive when going forward or backward at low RPMs. My boat is a 2007 20-V. I changed the oil in my V-Drive in April.
If I increase the RPM's the noise goes away. Is this indicative of my V-Drive going bad? Should I increase my idle?

    Thanks for any help,
    Al

How do you know it's the v-drive? Lots of components in that area. Could it be the transmission, for example? I was having transmission problems a while back that involved both function (not engaging properly) and acoustics (weird sounds). A mechanic's stethoscope revealed that the sound was actually coming from the shaft seal, which was having its own separate issues. The transmission was replaced under warranty, and I replaced a component of the shaft seal at the same time, and all has been perfect ever since. My point is that it might be a good idea to confirm where the sound is coming from, because that will affect your diagnostics.

I have the same issue but two things helped. First the oil pump in the vdrive is stopped turning by a little pin thats pressed into the oil pump cap. Thats the cap that's right in front as you are looking at the vdrive with 6 bolts. That pin can work itself out a little. Any more than 1/8" will make the pump stick a little which keeps the oil from flowing at low RPMs. You can look this upon the walter v drive site and ther are good instructions on how to fix it.. Just take the cap off and press in the pin a little if its out any more than a 1/8" using a C-clamp. Easy to do. You dont even have to drain the oil.

Second thing on mine is that it happened only below 650 RPMs so I raised my RPMs at idle while in gear to 725 or so. Now I only notice it when the vdrive/ engine is cold and the RPM drops below 650. I have a carbed engine so one quick pump of the throttle and the RPM rises above 725 as set. I think you can set it to as high as 800 per the manual (while in gear).

There is a third possibility that your dampner plate springs are wearing out which causes the small amount of idle vibration to go through to your transmission. To fix that is about a $500 fix by a mechanic. Its like changing the clutch plate in a car. I would try the first two things to see if that helps you like it did me and see what happens.

Hope this helps. Here is a pic of the oil cap and the little pin.
