Dinged Prop on '07 24 VE

Dinged my prop. Does anyone know if an ACME-228S prop puller can be used to remove it? Does the key come out also when the prop is removed or does the key have to be removed first? Also, does the prop have to be replaced if only one blade is slightly bent or can it be repaired. Thanks for any help.

Yes, the ACME 228S C-Clamp puller can be used.

The key may stay on the shaft or it may come off with the prop. Most important part is to make sure that the key doesnt get pushed back when the prop is reinstalled.

Most prop dings can be fixed by a prop shop.

Thanks! Do you have any recommendations for prop shops since I am going to have to send it off anyway?

Contact ACME and they should be able to provide you with some recommended shops closest to you.

You can always check to see if you even need a puller. I just put a new prop on and didn't need a puller. Just a slight tug and it popped free. The prop before it was an absolute nightmare and needed every trick in the book to get it off.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

I have had mixed results in getting my prop repaired. After one repair, my boat had a vibration at around 3200 rpm. Several trips to the prop shop did not fix it. Finally, got a new prop and it solved the vibration problem. If it is a bad ding, you may want to go straight for a new prop. They are pretty reasonable if you buy them from Mike or Andrew on this forum.

I damaged a prop earlier this summer. Time to repair cramped my trip schedule so I bought a new one with puller. Called ACME, shipped the old prop back to them for repair in the new box. Cost (depending on extent of damage) is anywhere from $120-$150, plus freight both ways. Might be closer shops, but ACME is the best choice IMO if you want it repaired right.

I made a prop puller out of an old 4" c clamp. It works great. I took the foot off of the screw end so it would center on the shaft. I then ground the clamp end in to a semi circle so that the screw and shaft would be in line.

                  Prop removal.
                  1)Take out pin.
2)Loosen nut a few turns. "this is to catch the prop and key when it slides foward"
3)Install puller tighten up. Some props will jsut pop off easy others will require a tap from a mini sledge on the clamp end of the puller to slide the prop to the nut.
                  4) Remove nut and prop.
