    6.0L Overheating

    I just bought my first Tige 24V 6.0L. 2005 with 97 hrs.

Got it for a great price.

This weekend I threw the serpentine belt in a very low gear. Replaced the belt to find out the engine is overheating. Took out the impeller - It was destroyed. I replaced accordingly. I am assuming the water pump is still working. Do I need to clean the debris from the old impeller in the transmission screen?

    Where is the transmission screen?

    ANY help is much appreciated!!!!

Follow the hose going from the pump to the engine and remove the hose at the first piece of metal the it encounters. It is here you will find those missing pieces of impeller and also have located the transmission oil cooler.
Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

Just curious. Is there always a strainer at the hose/trans cooler interface?

And it is very important to get all the pieces out of there!

Thank you all. I was able to find that screen and it was seriously clogged.

Probably saved a couple days worth of time and a couple hundred dollars in labor charges.

Plan is to open her up this weekend and see how well she runs - Hopefully that was the fix!

          Thanks all!

Bryancm, the cooler bundle is on all raw water cooled heat exchangers inline EXCEPT the Mercruiser cool fuel system, that is just an open bundle like a power steering cooler.

This is probably a dumb question, but which is the 'in' and which is the 'out' on the water pump? There is obviously two hoses, one on top of the other. The bottom one appears to head for the v-drive and the top one appears to go to the motor. The top one only has about 4" of hosing before it hits a metal pipe of slightly smaller diameter. I was just curious if the strainer was at the v-drive or at that metal pipe/hose interface off the top tube.

              Thanks!

                Who Knows ???

                Bryancm -

From my impeller housing, I followed the bottom hose to the first "metal canister" and it was here where I found the screen full of the old impeller pieces.

My boat is still running too hot - Approaches the 250 degree mark within 5-10 minutes at idle.

I don't know what else to do. I have replaced the impeller, cleaned the transmission screen, put on a new serpentine belt, and changed the transmission fluid. I just had the oil changed before boating season started.

I'm lost - The only thing left I can think of is the water pump and there's no way this should have issues with only 97 hours on the original engine. The engine "sounds" great when it's running. Maybe I put the belt on wrong - But I sure as hell don't think I did ...

I hate to take it into the Tigè dealer for specific fiancial reasons but I guess I have no choice ???

                Any help ?????????????

Just speculation, but maybe since the impeller was destroyed some pieces got up into the waterpump and clogged it or ruined it?

Wow, 97 hours on a 2005-that boat should be brand new if it was stored in a garage or well covered. Maybe this is why they got rid of it?

If the serp belt went out also, maybe the thing has dry-rot - bad belt, bad impeller, hmm whats next. Maybe hoses? I understand not going to the dealer for $$ reasons, but it might not be a bad idea to have them do a "once over" on it. Maybe they will find other things wrong do to sitting so long. At the very least-good insurance and less of a chance of the boat letting you and your family sitting on the water. Do you know how long it was sitting? Last time fluids were changed (you did mention oil-what about trans fluid)? Maintenance records? - just some quick thoughts off the top of my head.

Make sure the new impeller is the correct one. Some MP motors use a Johnson impeller and others use a slightly taller jabsco impeller

Yeah, I'm using the jabsco that's the correct one - Or at least the impeller matches the same on the housing.

I'm dumbfounded - I have back flushed the entire system pertaining to the impeller to remove anything that shouldn't be there - And vice versa. I have even taken off all the hoses pertaining to water and flushed them.

When I take off the hose into the top of the heat exchanger, from the impeller, I can't get the impeller to push any water through.

                      Thoughts?

Would the water pump affect this in any way?

I took off the impeller cover and the impeller is turning very well...

Finally took the boat in - They tell me I was a quart low on V-drive fluid and the seal in the back of the impeller housing needed to be replaced. They claimed that with the new thermostat (187 degree - Of which I installed) the boat should run at approx 200 degrees depending on water temp.

                        Does this make sense?

At first, the dealership could not figure out the problem.

I'm curious to see if this weekend fixes anything...

I had the same issue. After replacing almost everything it was just a loose ground wire. I ended up taking it to the shop for them to find it. You could also check your temp sending unit. It could be going bad. There is also a thread on hear about a modification. I did it on my boat and have not broke 175 since.

The seal on the waterpump could have gone bad. Even with few hours, lots of overheating could have killed the pump. Are you going through lots of impellers?

                              Wow ..

So I picked the boat up from the Tige shop Friday. Told me everything was good to go. Of course I was skeptical after what they "told" me was wrong.

Spent 10 minutes on the water and the temp guage was climbing to 250 degrees. Now they do not know what's wrong .. This is a circus.
