    rear rudder

I think my rudder is out of align. I have not hit anything my boat has 33 hours on it at this point. Is this something that is common. A visual inspection of the rudder it looks like the mount has moved about 1/16 of a inch looking at the sealer etc.. Is this something I should be checking often or not? Is there a way to tell if it is where it should be or a referance point to align it to?

    Thanks David

Does it drive different or feel different? Meaning why did you look at the rudder to start with? I think a bent tracking fin would be more responsible for a handling or steering issue, but im not saying you don't have a potential problem. I'm just curious if this is the first time you looked at it and maybe when it was installed at the factory the glue/sealant wasn't set yet and it was adjusted there.

I will post pictures when I get home this afternoon. I noticed the steering wheel wasnot straight when I was driving the boat in a straight line. It is almost like a car that needs a alignment. like there is not neutral position. The boat always wants to turn right.

        thanks

Cars have nearly 100% friction between the steer wheels and the pavement, so its easy to set the steering wheel/tire alignment so the wheel is centered while the car is going straight.

Boats skip across the water. Prop wash is the reason for the slight pull.

This sealer has looked like this since i picked the boat up. It looks like the rudder plate has moved. I have checked the screws with a hand tool and they seem tight. I have not tried to use any kind of pneumatic tool not knowing how tight they need to be

The effect is called P-factor due to the asymmetric thrust produced from the propeller, it's what makes the boat back up to the right as well. You can adjust and center your steering for slow speeds or high speeds or split the difference. My boat is set up centered for slow speed.

I am just making sure there is nothing wrong. I wasn't sure if the rudder was able to move and needed periodic adjustments. I am new the inboards, still learning the no Maneuverability at low speeds.

                  thanks for the help guys.

Ewok, how do change it from centered high vs low speed, I thought my 03 had that blasted weighted or loaded rudder for the slalom guys, it pulls pretty hard and all the newer boats seem to track straight if you remove your hand

There was a thread on here about a year ago about adjusting the center of the steering wheel. I think you unbolt the steering cable under the helm and have someone center the rudder, then reattach the cable to the steering wheel. Or you can mark the "centered" steering position on the wheel while at speed, get back to land, set the wheel up and have someone hold the rudder in that position, then unbolt the steering cable, center the wheel and reattach the cable to the steering wheel while someone is holding the rudder in the at speed "centered" position. Then when the boat is going down the lake the wheel will look centered.

To center the wheel, you have to move the pivot point by the rudder. It's different on each boat but most of the pivot points are a clamped ball(looks like) around the cable. To adjust, remove the bolt that holds the clamp and adjust the cable housing either forward or back to center the wheel. This centering adjustment will change with ballast and where it's located: the more drag on one side the more the boat will steer that way.

Racerdave, it does appear your rudder is bent visually and then looking at the external mount it shows that way as well but because the picture is out of square and the prop blades are close the parallel, it's tough to tell. FYI, the rudders on all inboards and v-drives are offset to allow for shaft removal. Look inside the boat and see what she has to say...cracks, off kilter mounting screws and nuts, plate misalignment. The bead of 5200 (white silicone) should look uniform and undisturbed from when it was bedded. More appears to have been added externally on the rudder mounting plate as there are wipe marks (rough edges) on the bead. How many hours when you bought it? And no, it shouldn't be pulling hard to starboard while at speed but you also have a left hand pitch prop, which, if you would even notice it, would cause the boat to "walk" to port when first put into gear with no forward momentum much the same as it will "walk" to starboard when put in reverse. Keep us posted.

I think that rudder looks jacked. It looks like it's not perpendicular to the boat hull. Side to side, don't know the photo is a little off. Could just be the photo.

The boat had .7 hours on it when I picked it up. It has about 35 hours on it 3 months later. I cought a flesh eating bateria from our local lake.... So I have not had the boat out in a month to see if it was a fluke or if drivability is still off.

Hope your ok Racerdave, what part of the lake do you think you caught the bacteria? Were you noodling per chance? IDK how those guys escape the warm water flesh eating bacteria.
