    Steering Cable

I have a 21V 2001 Tige and need to replace the steering cable for the third time. I do not have problems with too much water collecting around the engine. Does anyone else have the same problem and if so, any solutions to prevent the need for continued replacement?

I replaced mine last spring on my 2100V.
    Just curious,
Was it routed above or below the gas tank? My old one (original) was under the tank and I routed the new one above the tank. I am hoping it lasts a long time because I am not looking forward to doing that again.

I think you can expect to replace the steering cable every 5 or so years on any of these boats. Just the nature of the beast. Can't help the moisture and corrosion that occurs with normal use. Thankfully it's not too expensive to do the job.

      Ambivalent? Yes. Or Not.

The first time I replaced the cable I put it back under the gas tank. The second time I replaced it, I put it over the gas tank. It didn't make much of a difference with the cable locking up, but it was a lot easier to replace over the tank.

I need to do the same in my 02 23V.

Is the Teleflex cable the best or is there a better brand.

Also, not to hijack but an 18 foot cable for a 23V Correct?

          Thanks

I can get you this cable for the boat. If it is an 18 foot there is an upgrade to this it is SSC15418 which is the EXTREAM version of this cable. It is much smoother than the SSC13418 which is the factory cable. They are $189.00 shipped to your front door. Let me know if you need one. PM or email me andrew@automarinecare.com

Turn your steering all the way to the left when your boat is in storage. This keeps the cable closed instead of extended and keeps it stored in the area of the cable where there is lubrication. This is directly form a TELEFLEX rep. You will get longer life out of your cable.

That is good information. I will have to start doing that.

Andrew, is an 18' cable needed for the RZ4? I'll order one from you too but want the EXTREAM version.

Did you sell your boat BTW??

Nobody - unless the cable on your '08 is routed differently than my '09, you will want a 21-ft cable for an RZ4. I just replaced mine, and Andrew called Tige to verify the length since my marking were illegible. Unfortunately, they told him 19-ft, but there was absolutely no way that it could work following the factory routing. Got a 21-footer, and it worked perfectly. Measured the old one once I had cut and removed it. And it was 21-ft from the factory.

Thanks Ding, did you go above the gas tank? Did you go forward of the helm like some have done? Did you buy the extreme?

Yes - above the tank. That's how it was already routed from the factory, and I just went the same. It came up through the floor from a little hole just forward of the separation wall that normally holds the subwoofer (the hole was next to the bow walkthrough wall), then it went across the compartment to the starboard side, turning through an access area and making the 180-degree bend to connect with the steering column. Does that make sense?

And, yes, I used the Extreme. Love it so far - smoother and easier steering than when it was new, in my opinion.
