Leaking tranny fluid

Any idea's tranny fluid in bottom of bilge seems to be a slow leak on a 2005 22V. Doesnt seem to be leaking at seal of tranny and motor. Any thoughts.

Is it the ZF transmission?

I didn't read the thread that Iwndr posted, but do you do your own maintenance? Or when was the last time the oil was changed? There are breathers where excess oil will come out of.

My first thought would be to make sure that the entire transmission and v drive are clean then run it. After a while you can go back and see where the oil is coming from. I believe that if it comes from the breather it may "spray" or get all over so you can't tell the source. You can start at the top and work your way down until you reach the oil. That should help you find the source. You might even were a white cotton glove to see once you have fluid on it.

You might not be able to see it leak while just idling it on the fake a lake, mine would only leak while out on the water with the Tranny engaged.
The first leak I found was where the lower hose went into the transmission cooler, the second and final leak was the bolt that is shown in the dwg in the other attached thread.
I'm sure you know this but do not put it in gear while running it in the driveway.

I found my leaks by laying the white oil absorbant pads under the engine /Tranny and following the trail. Good luck

Careful there... you shouldn't engage the transmission while on the trailer. The strut bushing won't be in water and won't be cooled. You can damage the bushing and the propshaft. Same is true for the stuffing box (or PSS seal). These components expect to be immersed when turning.

Just a friendly caution.

look around the shift lever. There is and oring that seals off the shift valve that has been known to leak.

Oh and BTW if you spray the strut with some water you can put it into drive to see if the leak appears. Just kep it wet and you will be fine.

Think I've got the same problem as you have. Looked at my gearbox fluid today and it was foamy and light pink. Looks like water had mixed with the ATF. No problem with the V-drive though. Think its the gearbox coolant component so will replace it. I will let you know if it fixes the problem

Yes but then tou have the problem of the prop shaft seal. How do you keep water on that? That is somthing you have to be careful about.
