    Fuel leak mpi 5.7 22v 05

Hi, looking for a little advice, if anyone has had a similar problem. Noticed VERY strong petrol smell so didn't go out and checked in the bilge, it was full of raw fuel!! not good.

So, hand pumped it all out and totally dried the floor so I can see what might be happening. Removed about 6lts or so I would guess.

Doesn't seem to be coming from the tank as the forward section of the bilge is still dry after 10 minutes, so I can only think that its the lines or the pump.

Has anyone had a similar problem and if so, where was the origin of the leak just to start me off?

    Thanks in advance

    Update

Okay, so forget the idea it´s coming from the motor, went to look this morning having completely dried it out last night, and there is clean fuel in the bilge again, so I think can only really be coming from the tank.

So.. is there any history of these tanks failing, the sticker on the tank says Florida Marine Tanks FMT-38-Tige

    Thanks in advance

      Another update

Hi, another day passes and more petrol appears from nowhere!

So, my engineer went to the boat early this morning with a view to removing the tank and getting it reparied, WOW, how on earth do you remove the tank????

His only suggestion was to have to take out the engine and V and then slide it out backwards, no way!

So does anyone have any other ideas? Help!!!

I'm not certain about the 22V, but the floor on my 24V can be removed exposing the entire fuel tank. I have to remove the rear seat back cushion via thumb screws located forward of the engine, then remove the fiberglass section exposing the v-drive. The floor simply lifts up from there.

          It's out!!!!

Wow, it was pretty similar to a pygmy giving birth to an elephant but the damn thing is out.

          For reference, the method was,

remove the centre seat section via 4 thumbscrews on reverse of engine bay glass.

then remove the seat back with more thumbscrews in all 4 corners

then lift away the hatch set into the carpet exposing some (some!!!) of the fuel tank

Disconnect all fittings to tank and drain with hand pump

remove bilge pump and set aside

remove top one of the 6 (i think) bolts holding the cover onto the oil pump of the v drive

remove the oil check plug from v drive

slide the tank back as far as possible

Lift up and rest ontop of oil pump assembly on v drive

attach a rope around the ski pylon and then under one of the rear brackets on tank and then back again, this should allow you to pull the tank backwards by heaving on the rope and at the same time lift by the filler spout.

After many days have passed and you have given up all hope, the tank will eventually pop free and you can hug it with joy as it is massive!!!

Mine has eroded completely in one spot and badly pitted in lots more. See attached picture.

Now I need a plastic replacement, does anyone know where I can buy one

Here it is jammed tight against the oil pump of the drive

And below is the culprit, eaten right through
