    2003 22v overheats

My 22v over heats often when I first start it for the day. It does not suck any water. If I turn it off a and let it cool once or twice it starts working and then works fine the rest of the day. What could be the problem?

Check the impeller first, then check for lake debris in the strainer. If no strainer, check the transmission cooler water inlet for lake debris. After that, check for rubber impeller parts in the thermostat... and while you have it out, replace the thermostat.

impeller housing maybe or the wear plate in the impeller. Sounds like the rubber impeller is dry rotted and shrinks until it overheats and then expands enough to creat a vacuum.

Sounds like similar problem I've had: my 2003 24V idles fine in slip but once take out it overheats within 30 seconds. Just got my 2003 24V and it only has 65 hourson it. Anything to check besides lake debris in hoses and the thermostat? Is the thermostat easy to find and replace? Thx.....

Yes check for debris in the transmission cooler, once this is resolved add a sea strainer, they cheap and work awesome.

Thermostat is easy. Buy some extra gaskets at NAPA. THey carry a sticky-back paper gasket. I keep 3 with me. Get a 140 or 160 degree thermostat. Take your old one with you to the store and they can give you a match. Avoid the 180 deg. thermostat. The only trick to getting the t-stat out is that there is a plastic retainer ring holding it in the housing. It has to be pryed out. Dont break it!
            Good luck.

After having some overheating problems with my 24v, my mechanic got it resolved by REMOVING the thermostat. Boat seems to be running fine now and temp stays around 125 on the guage. Question: Is there any short term or long term risk in running my 2003 24v without a thermostat?

Running without stat is hard on the engine, block will get uneven hot spots, computor system uses temp to adjust fuel trim and spark advance, which without stat will run like a carburator with the choke on.
