    Steering Cable 20 Switch V

My steering cable has gone bad again in my 2004 Tige Switch V and I am going to change it out myself this time and save some $$. Anyone know the length of the cable and recommend a place to purchase it from would be good. I have a back mount rack system. Thanks!

Not sure on the length (check your existing cable - see if it has the part number visible on it - length is usually the last numbers of the part #, either shown in inches or in feet, depending on the manufacturer).

As far a place to purchase, Andrew at Haney's Auto Marine Care is great. He may even know the required length. He can also make sure you get the newer "extreme" cable, which is supposed to be more corrosion resistant. www.automarinecare.com

        Where are you located?
I got mine from TWS (Tige water Sports). In addition, when my second cable started to stick, I drill a small hole about 6 inches from the steering block. I then squirted in 4 oz of WD40. This was a year ago and it still is working like new. I now add WD40 to the cable every time I change the fluids on the boat.
Tige, it's a way of life!

I have an 04 , check your routing the early boats exited the cable off the rack towards the port side from the helm, later boats exited toward the starboard so as to get a better radiousas it turns towards the bilge openning, if it faces the port you will have to flip the helm 180.
This made a big difference in my steering, and we have dissused this before but I highly reccomend ground straps on the steering system to eliminate electrollis.

Give me a call I have one in stock for that boat I can send you. it is a newer Extream version of a cable that Teleflex makes SSC154... it depends on the boat length as to what the ... represents. They run between 140-180 shipped to your front door. You can also email me at: andrew@automarinecare.com or call me at 6613685643 or cell 6619006784

              All,

I completed the replacement of the steering cable today. It wasn't fun and it really wasn't too hard, to say.... The hardest part was emptying the gas out of my tank so the cable could pull under it and lifting it up about 1/4 inch. My arms are ate up from being scratch by everything.

              Thanks for the replies!

Ouch, you can run those on top of the gas tank in most cases. It is usually better to do that. This way it keeps the cable up out of any water if by chance you get water in the transom of the boat. Glad to hear you got it done though

I tried to run it on top of the gas tank, however I had less clearance between the floor and the top of the gas tank. Believe me I wanted to after reading the forum.

How many hours on boat, and is this the first cable, my first cable lasted 150hrs , Im on my second and currently have 1000hrs, with no problem.

This is my second steering cable. I bought the boat new in 2004 from the Slalom Shop in Lewisville Texas. Just as you, after approx 150 hrs the steering became real stiff and I complained to the folks at the slalom shop and they, "said" they contacted Tige' to see if they would give us a new cable and I was to split the cost installation with the shop. Splitting the cost was $300 which I felt rob! I truly dont believe they did replace the cable because it still felt somewhat stiff and after a year it became stiffer and stiffer. I knew this year I had to replace the cable it was like steering an 18 wheeler without powersteering! If it only last 150-200 hours this time I will definely find a way to get it above the gas tank.

If it exits to the port , thats one reason why its failing, thats what i was stating earlyer, the turn comeing off the rack is to tight , so teleflex reccommended rotating the helm 180 and mounting the rack with a longer cable to exit to starboard which makes a larger ark and less internal wear.
