Original or Modified path when replacing the Steering Cable?

I have a question for those that have a 2007 - ? 22Ve's and RZ2's that have the gas tank that was put in after the steering cables and blocks the hole. For those who have replaced the steering cable, how many have gone through the original hole and how many have done a modified path? From reading on here it sounds like it is possible to just enlarge the existing hole. I have talked to some who suggest not to mess with the existing hole but to go through the bulkhead and create a new hole. Are there any other options? Which one would be the best route and why? I personally want to go with the existing hole, but I am now undecided. I thought I was ready to order the steering cable but now want to make sure that I make the best choice before I order it.

    Thanks.

I did it this summer and went the modified route on an 07 22ve. I already had the hole from my heater hoses. It was a 6 hour job. If I had to do it again, it would be a 3-4 hour job. Taking out the rear seat had its problems. I unhooked it, cut it, tied a rope to it, and pulled it out. Then tied the rope to the new one and snaked it in. It took a couple of tries to get it on top of the tank. Once that happened it was easy. Taking the boat apart to get to it is the most time consuming part. I will say that I think it would be VERY difficult to go through the existing hole without removing the tank. All this being said, if this new one goes bad, I will trade it in before doing it again! I had the same battle w/my 05 22v last Oct! Taking the seat out took forever due to the amazingly hidden screws in the trim strip at the bottom of the seat. After that a few, bolts that hold the floor down. I used the orignal hole but it took some elbow grease and patience to pull the new cable thru and then route it over the tank. There was a pretty good thead about stearing cable changes that should help you find the right one and a good price! Good luck, and I'll find the link to that thread...

I just finished mine up and I modified the existing hole. It can be done. You have to position the rudder end toward the front of the boat and get it as high and as forward as you can before you try to pull it back around over the gas tank. I found that two people are better than one at this. One person to push the cable up and forward and the other to pull the rope back. Once this was done it popped up and over and the rest was easy. This was the hardest part.

The only other hard part was getting to the 1-1/8" nut. I also found two people to be faster than one at this task.

I considerd going through the bulk head and back around but would have needed to get a longer cable. I had already bought the 18 foot and I didn't want to wait any longer or spend any more money.

Well I finally finished changing the steering cable. It is much better now.

For anyone that is looking at changing their steering cable check the part number on the steering cable. I was shipped a 17 instead of an 18 footer. Glad I checked before I started.

I used the existing hole but I cut it to match the piece that hides the cables. I found that using a 2x3 piece of wood I was able to lift the steering cable to the same height of the gas tank and pull it around while another person pushed it through the hole. For the nut on the support tube I had bought a 1 1/8" wrench but ended up using a small crescent / adjustable wrench, not enough room with all the stuff in there and didn't have anything to cut the new wrench.

I have an 06 22ve just replaced a the steering cable. The cable was below the gas tank, but I ran the the cable above the tank to keep it out of the water. I would recommend this, my old cable had water in it when I pulled it out. So above the tank would be my recommendation. I went through the same hole in the floor, but it was tough and took some time. Well worth it I think for the life of the cable. A flash light and a small mirror is very helpful.
