Motor got wet and started bogging?

    '99 21V

I had my boat overweighted admittedly, although the rub rail wasn't even in the water. I'm thinking that when I come "off plane" from surfing, water is flowing into the engine compartment through the blower vent. I throttle up to get a surfer up and it would start then bog bad and sputter and cough until I came back to idle. I got worried the first time, shut it down and it would just crank and not start back up. I looked in there and my bilge wasn't pumping water but I had some water down there. I put my 200lbs on the starboard locker cover and it started pumping water. I tried to start it up again and it started, then I notice the belt was flinging water EVERYWHERE. I must have had a lot more water that I thought? Is the bilge on the starboard side? what can I do to help prevent this? I am definately not weighting the boat like I had it yesterday anymore for sure, but what other suggestions do you have?

What is probably getting wet and causing this motor issue? Distro cap wet?
    Waiting for another good one!

I just finished putting in a second bilge pump next to the steering arm for just this reason. My 2100v has the original through hull fitting on the starboard side so I mirrored the installation with a new through hull fitting on the port side. I used a Rule-Mate 1100 for the aft pump and have a Rule-Mate 750 in the front of the V-Drive. The 1100 uses a 1-1/8" outlet so I used a 1-1/8" through hull fitting rather than the factory 3/4". The hull is only about 5/8" thick in this area, so you can use a shorter fitting if you want.

Both pumps are wired together in parallel off the same switch. For automatic mode, connect the brown wire to the switched 12v lead and the black wire for ground. If you want to manually control the pumps, use the brown-white wire instead of the brown wire. With two pumps, the engine compartment is much drier, regardless of the boat attitude. I haven't tried wake surfing yet, so the extreme list may still cause problems...
