Morse & Teleflex Steering Cables, Lengths & Part #s

Question: Does anyone who has replaced the OEM Morse or Teleflex steering cable see any issue with running an extra +2 foot cable? My stock cable is 17 foot. I've found an unused original Morse cable but it is 19 foot (only $50). I'm hoping that the extra 2 feet of length won't create any problems and I can simply hide it under the floor near the gas tank. For $50 vs $160 is appears to be a good option for me. Opinions?

Information: I've done a lot of research for a replacement cable to my 2001 Tige 2300V which has standard Morse 290 Command rotary cable installed on many V-drive models. The original Morse part number is 304411-000-0204 (204 inches or 17 feet). For those who don't know, Morse was purchased by Teleflex years ago so this particular part number is no longer available.

However, Teleflex does offer a replacement for the Morse 290 Command series helms. The most recent part number is SSC29017 (this part number obseletes the previous # SSC5217). You must special order this part # from a Teleflex distributor but I've found several that can do it (~$160). Seaway Marine @ 1-800-332-0803 can order them. West Marine is another dealer among others.

Please do. Two sides of your story! If a 17 footer was almost too short on your 21V then I would think a 19 footer wouldn't be an issue & the extra length helpful.....

More technical insight. So I spoke with an expert at Discount Inboard Marine. He gaves me some very good information regarding the older Morse cables.

He said the Teleflex SSC61XY & SSC72XY series appear to work for the orginal Morse 304411 cables. However, he said it is deceiving & those Teleflex cables are NOT made for the Morse 290 Commander. If used, may appear ok but the cables will pop-off (likely due to the quick disconnect system). So don't use them! Only the Morse 304415 series are to be used with SSC61XY & SSC72XY. Only the Morse 304411 series are to be used with teh SSC290XY series.

Hope this helps. BTW, those SSC290XY series are special order only. No distributor will carry them or highly unlikely. Appears to be a 3 weeks wait until Teleflex ships them to their distributors. Suxs we can't go directly through Teleflex.

I have a 2000 2300V. I was told that thety do not make the replacement cable for the Morse helm. I replaced the helm and the cable with a 17'. I wished that I had replaced it with an 18' as it was a tight fit going over the gas tank. I am not sure about going 2 feet bigger, but I got my cable through SBFAN and it was very reasonable.

            Steering Cable Morse 304411-000-0204.0 8153 (17') Teleflex 60555 (17') Hanny's P/N
these are the numbers i recorded, i still need to look on the boat which one i actually installed. I want to say i used the 15' teleflex which was a very tight install, i retraced under the gas tank by using the old cable as a fish line to pull the new one through.

the teleflex connections worked great, when i got the right cable!

wow, what was i smoking earlier today. that picture is of the throttle cable, that is the cable that i installed short.

the part numbers are right in my above post at 17' i would not waste my time installing a 19' cable.

the down side to installing the 19' cable is that it could be too stiff for your likeing with the extra bends in the cable to make up the extra two feet. you could always resell it on ebay.

sorry about the mixed up info. i guess i rock.

When I was researching this a couple of years ago I found a reference to the SSC61xx (xx = length) that would work with the Morse Rotary Command 290 helm, but it needed a 3924516P adapter.

Here are the parts that I used to replace my helm and cable from Morse. The parts were cheaper than what is listed on the label.
I think that everything all together was around $200-250.

BTW, if you can make the 19' cable work with your helm, I don't think that you will have a problem with the extra 2 feet in the 2300V (maybe not in the 2100V). As I mentioned earlier, I wish I had the 18 instead of the 17. I would have preferred 19 over 17.

I have a 21v and put in a new 18' cable a few years ago. Because of a couple extra slight bends, it was almost as tight as the old one I took out. Traded it for a 17' and it works great. My point is (as someone mentioned earlier) too much is not good.

FOR you MORSE Command 290 owners (Years 2001 and pre). I found a distrutor that carries the 304411 series cable for about $90. Call Trans Pacific Distributors at 800-688-6208.

                          GUYS,

So I spoke with Tige. There appears to be some incorrect information regarding the 2300V. Tige said that in 2001 they went to Teleflex cables. Originally, they installed the Teleflex SSC13417 (17 footer). However, I spoke with their customer relations manager & he said they now recommend 18 footers for the 2300V. Part # SSC13418.

Pre-2001 they did install Morse cables.
