me personally, I would not settle for fixing the crack. The proper and professional solution, is a new (re-man is fine) block.
As to the difference between a short block and swapping all the guts from the old block to new block......................labor time along could exceed the cost of a re-man block and just swapping the heads and externals. With swapping the guts, you would need new rings and bearing, and might as well install a new oil pump.
So looking at it from a business perspective, I think the most efficient and cost effective route, would be the short block. It looks to be a happy medium between labor time of my crew, which im paying, and my out of pocket costs. Its also a win for the boat owner as its likely a quicker solution compared to swapping all the guts.
