    Water pump pulley issue

2004 22v merc 5.7. Idler pulley squeaking for a while, wd40 for quick fix, today after a few surfing sets, start to run to the ramp and saw voltage low and temp up, neutral and looked at belt, it was loose so shut down and saw it came off water pump, spun pulley by hand and it turned like it should, hooked up belt. Started up but noticed same thing, looked and belt was off water pumo pulley, did this 2x more....

Took a closer look and noticed pulley and shaft looked it came out of housing by and inch or two, used a small hammer and tapped it back in. Hooked up belt and idled to ramp...all good.
But it did look like water pump shaft and pulley was moving in and out. Tensioner pulley was chirping so i
Pulled it, felt fine but need to replace is there a Automotive pulled that works?

Why is the pump shaft moving in and out, how is it captured in the housing?

Yes they do if its brass pump housing. Fairly common failure. If you dont have a pulley puller/driver you will need one. Can get you the Merc PN when I am back in the shop Tuesday if you dont find it before then

So....when you do the rebuild make sure to note your pulley and where its at on shaft. Usually pulley is flush with end of shaft.

When you drive pulley on the new one BE PATIENT and check as you drive it on. It can easily be driven too far onto the shaft and for some reason always fights you coming back. Best to take your time and slowly drive until its flush. Just what Ive seen happen anyways.

Much appreciated, was also going to check auto store to a puller unless there is a vice trick... pressing it on new shaft require a press or is there a alternative?
Found a "how to" here http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?...er-pump.72821/

Perfect! Again thank you! I do enjoy wrenching on the boat, just wish it would break on the last day of a long weekendnot the first day... 2 years ago the Vdrive busted the #9 gear on the 2nd day of vacation, easy rebuild but lost several days of prime lake time!

BTW very easy rebuild, went and got a pulley puller/installer at auto parts store (loaner) took about an hour start to finish and that 47 minutes of looking where the kid hid my tools.

Yes sir! thank you for the help... now on to the what appears to be a Merc issue "Hard starting when warm" always takes the throttle to be advanced (in neutral) just drives me nuts to have to do that. Idles and runs like a champ, just doesn't like starting when the engine is warmed up.

For those of you who know, that water pump is a POS. We will not rebuild or even replace them anymore because they're such garbage and a PITA. Instead, Hardin Marine produces a lifetime stainless steel version with a bolt on pulley. They look slick and are 1000 times better than the crappy Mercury units. They also utilize a different impeller from the stock unit, the previous water pump impeller version with the "D" shaped drive instead of the "double flat" drive of the new impeller. Make the upgrade to Globe Industries silicone impeller and you'll never have to touch it. They're less expensive than replacing the mercruiser pump, which needs to be done when the bearings fail and hog out the housing, but again, LIFETIME of never having to touch it again. Here are the links:

I havent had much luck talking our customers into this upgrade. I think mostly because they see their current MerCruiser equipped boat as a stepping stone to their next boat. You are right though. Bith the plastic and brass housing RWPs are garbage.

Wait, your saying this solution would prevent you having to replace the impeller again as well?
