Closed loop cooling systems on boats work about the same as cars and trucks do except they use the lake water to exchange the heat from the radiator instead of air. The thermostat controls the coolant flow in the engine to the heat exchanger and the lake water always runs through the heat exchanger. Sometimes boat shops will replace a impeller when it comes apart and not back flush the system. The old impeller will get stuck in the heat exchanger.

Glad u got it fixed. Have fun

Just had a similar problem last weekend. Had the Nick at the Katherine's landing Mojave boat repair come down to take a look at it. He found a bunch of grass and some fishing line in my intake hose. After the repair everything was fine for a few minutes, then it started overheating again. I was now stuck at the launch ramp marina and he was nice enough to hop in the truck and come down there.

He thinks my seal in my water pump might be going bad and sucking air into the system rather than water from the impeller. The impeller housing was getting warm and I went through three impellers in one day.

If your impeller looks good, and there's nothing in the line, it could be that you are having the same problem I am.

On that subject, anyone know if a pump replacement is something I should dare tackle myself?

By the way, Nick and Gary at Katherine's landing are two of the nicest guys you'll ever meet at a boat repair shop.
