    replacing a trailer ;-(

Any one had to fork over some dough for a trailer? When I bought my boat, the trailer wasn't in great shape. Now it's in worse shape and I think I might need to replace it.

These things ought not to wear out, but alas mine appears to be doing so. Anyone else bought a replacement trailer? Local shop? Dealer? What's your story?

What part of the country are you located in? You should be able to go directly to a trailer MFR.

I got a quote from loadmaster for like $3800 for a 21' boat. Shop around or look for used one or have yours redone.

              Trailer Pic

I snapped a quick pic with my phone over the weekend of the trouble spot.

Looks like a substantial crack and subsequent rust.

Is this a repair that can be done in one day? i.e. lauch boat, fix trailer while boat in water, pull boat out?

go to a local trailer shop - they can cut out that crossmember and replace w/another. If you don't have a boat trailer shop in your area, look for a good welding shop or utility trailer shop.

I'm with yllw 20 on this. Unless you have cracks and rust everywhere, I would repair it. A good welding shop can save you a couple grand.

                    Metalcraft

Called a local trailer manufacturer. On the phone they said they'll "refinish" a.k.a. take the trailer apart, sand blast, powder coat, and put it all back together again like Humpty Dumpty for $895.

No word on cutting & replacing cracked bit.

Good Price? Bad Price? What do you think?

I'd like to hear plusses and minuses of galvanized vs. powder coated trailers.

That sounds like a hell of a deal to me.

I'd jump on that, especially if they'll take care of the crack.

If it were my trailer, I'd just grind it clean and re-weld it myself. But that's me, and I have the right equipment.
